Dear 2008 Applicants,

We know this can be an especially anxious time for you so here is an update on the status of our process:

We have received nearly 25,000 applications for admission (the largest in Stanford's history), which means that we will be able to offer admission to just 10% of those students who have applied.  At this point in time, we have processed approximately 75% of the estimated 300,000 credentials we expect to receive.  Beginning February 15, we will start sending confirmation emails to those candidates who have completed applications.  These emails will confirm that all credentials have been received and processed.

If we are missing any required credentials at that time, you will instead be sent both an email and a letter informing you of what credentials are missing that are critical to our evaluation process.  If we are missing any of your required credentials, you will have until February 28 to submit them.  Both the email and letter will explain in detail how you should submit any missing credentials.

Since we still have thousands of credentials to process, do not send any duplicate copies of your credentials before we contact you later this month.  You will, in no way, be penalized in our review process for credentials received and processed between now and February 28.

We will not be able to provide you with any more detailed information about the status of your application credentials prior to February 15, so we thank you in advance for your patience.  During that time, we ask that you refrain from calling or emailing to check on the status of your application, as we still have thousands of credentials to process and we do not want to unnecessarily alarm you, your counselors or teachers.   Please also understand that we do not track materials that are not required, so we will not be able to give you the status of any optional items sent (even if you call or email to request that information).

Our aim is to provide you with an admission decision no later than April 1.  All decisions will be sent by email from Dean Richard Shaw to the address you provided to us on your application.

Until then, we wish you the best.

Sincerely,

Shawn
