Surviving Paradise: The Art of Enrique Chagoya
Thursday, May 10

Drawing from his experiences living on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border and in Europe, Enrique Chagoya juxtaposes secular, popular, and religious symbols to address the ongoing cultural clash between the United States, Latin America, and the world. He uses familiar pop icons to create deceptively friendly points of entry for the discussion of complex issues. Through these seemingly harmless characters, Chagoya examines colonialism and oppression that continue to riddle contemporary American foreign policy and internal culture wars. Recently his work has been addressing issues of immigration and the economic recession.

Enrique Chagoya is a well-known artist and professor of Art and Art History at Stanford University. His work can be found in many public collections including the New York Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Francisco MOMA, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Cantor Arts Center.
