Works on Paper:
Prints, Drawings, and Photographs

The collection of works on paper includes more than 4,000 prints, 2,000 drawings, and 4,000 photographs. Organized by subjects or specific artists, approximately 100 of these works are always on view in four galleries. The selection rotates due to the light sensitivity of the works, with each being on display for a few months at a time.

Printmaking techniques --- including woodcut, engraving, etching, and lithography --- evolved through the centuries. The Center’s collection ranges from Albrecht Dürer's precise 15th-century works to Andy Warhol's 20th-century prints. Significant artists include Francisco Goya and Giovanni Battista Piranesi from the 18th century and Théodore Gericault from the early 19th century. A noteworthy collection of 20th-century prints from the Marmor Foundation includes works by Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and Frank Stella.

The drawing collection ranges from the 16th century to the present. Venetian studies by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Francesco Guardi represent the 18th century. English drawings include pen, ink, chalk, and watercolor examples by Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, and J. M. W. Turner. A substantial group of 250 drawings by William Trost Richards are the focus of the 19th-century American collection.

The photography collection contains nearly 500 images by Eadweard Muybridge, who worked for Leland Stanford. Also included are rare early examples by Henry Fox Talbot and Julia Margaret Cameron, as well as other 19th-century notables. More than 100 photographs by Ansel Adams, Robert Frank, and Leo Holub enhance the 20th-century photography collection.
