Alhadith is a web resource for students and scholars of Morisco language and culture. The developers of this project, led by Professor Vincent Barletta of the Department of Iberian and Latin American Cultures at Stanford University, envision it to be a constantly-evolving resource to which seasoned scholars and students alike may turn when embarking upon a research project on the Moriscos and topics related to their language/s and culture/s. To this end, we see the role of Alhadith as two-fold: first, as a practical, centralized, scholarly tool; and second, as a forum for discussion of the most current thinking on Morisco topics.

Hand with Henna

We’ve developed, first of all, a bibliography of scholarly work related to the Moriscos and their literature. Our plan is to develop a bibliography database into which we might import these references along with useful tags, notes, and attached files. The user will also find a catalog of the just-over two hundred manuscripts that make up the extant corpus of Aljamiado literature, both in the Iberian Peninsula and beyond. We have also made available a collection of digital texts that can be read and downloaded.

Alhadith has a strongly interactive and dialogic element. We’ve already received many comments on material in the posts section of the site, and we hope that we’ll continue to receive thoughtful and provocative responses from our readers.

We’d also like to express our thanks to the ongoing support of the Stanford University Division of Languages, Cultures, and Literatures and generous funding from the DLCL Research Unit.
