THE

HELEN AND PETER BING

SUMMER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

FOR STUDENTS ON FINANCIAL AID

Stanford in Washington students have the unique opportunity to work in public service in the nation’s capital. In order to encourage students to continue in their internships through the summer, Peter and Helen Bing have established a Bing Summer Fellowship Program. The program supports up to fifteen Stanford in Washington alumni by providing a $2500 stipend to help lessen the burden of an unpaid summer internship to students on financial aid. This enables students to take positions that serve their personal and professional development without having to worry about financial obligations. Furthermore, it extends Stanford in Washington’s commitment to public service by allowing students to continue working with public and nonprofit agencies and organizations that cannot afford to pay salaries to their interns. The internship should last a minimum of 8 weeks and be essentially full-time.

Because the internship experience is often enhanced by spending longer than 10 weeks in the same organization, spring students applying for the Bing Fellowship are encouraged to request that their SIW internship be extended through the summer months.  Fall and winter students should contact their supervisors about the possibility of returning the following summer in order to continue the work they started at Stanford in Washington. However, the fellowship may be applied to any substantive internship experience. Students are responsible for securing their own summer internships.
