Mandated Training for Faculty & Supervisors:
Who Must Be Trained?
California AB1825 mandates that all employers with more than 50 employees provide at least two hours of harassment prevention training to all supervisors every two years.
Definition of Supervisor:
A supervisor is anyone who
- supervises, directs, or evaluates the work of one or more employees or student employees (including TA’s, RA’s, casuals, or temps); or
- is an Academic Council faculty member (tenure line, research, teaching, performance).
The Provost has designated that all faculty members and Senior Lecturers will be defined as "supervisors" for purposes of this training mandate, whether or not they supervise or direct the work of others.

Faculty: YES
Tenure-Line Professors (Assistant, Associate, or Full), Senior Lecturers, Med Center-Line Professors or Clinician Educators.
Emeritus Professors, if recalled: YES
Emeritus professors who are not recalled to active duty do not have to train.
Visiting Faculty/Consulting Faculty/Acting Faculty: GENERALLY, YES
As a general rule, if an appointment is for less than six months, people in this group are exempt from this training requirement (those invited to teach a class for one quarter, for example.)
However, if a visiting professor has an ongoing appointment and teaches for one quarter every year (even if not on Stanford payroll), she or he would need to complete the training.
Unless individuals in this group can establish that they do not supervise any paid employees, they will be considered to be "supervisors" for the purpose of mandated sexual harassment training. If their duties are limited to overseeing the academic work of students and evaluating students, then they are not supervisors.
Senior Fellows:
Senior fellows need to train if they are on the Stanford payroll and supervise any employees.
Senior Lecturers/Artists in Residence: YES
Lecturers/Fellows/Instructors: GENERALLY, NO
Stanford has made this decision based on what is understood to be the general job duties of lecturers, fellows, and instructors. Senior lecturers are considered to be supervisors whether they supervise or not, but the requirement for lecturers, fellows, and instructors needs to be determined on a case-by-case basis. A lecturer, fellow, or instructor needs to comply with this training requirement if he or she supervises, directs, or evaluates the work of one or more employees or student employees (including TA's, RA’s, casuals, or temps.)
Postdocs
If a postdoc receives a paycheck from the University AND supervises or evaluates the work of other PAID employees (including temps, casuals, or students), then he or she needs to satisfy this training mandate.
School of Medicine Clinician Educators IF ON STANFORD PAYROLL, YES.
All CEs paid by Stanford must train, regardless of their %FTE. CEs in this group who are assigned to work at an affiliated institution must provide SHPO with proof of training received at that institution. Examples of affiliated institutions include Santa Clara County Medical Center and Kaiser. (See http://harass.stanford.edu/training_faq_elig.html for information on submitting proof of training.) CEs who are not paid by Stanford (for example, CE Affiliates) do not have to meet this state-mandated training requirement in their role as an affiliate of the University.
School of Medicine Adjunct Clinical Faculty/Residents: NO
They are excluded because they do not perform supervisory duties at Stanford.
Staff Supervisors: YES.
See "Definition of Supervisor" above. Supervisors do not need to have the words "supervisor" or "manager" included in their job title. Administrative associates can be supervisors if they supervise, direct, or evaluate the work of other employees, even if those employees are temps or students.
Academic Staff - Research: Generally, YES.
Senior Research Staff and Research Associates will be considered to be "supervisors" for the purpose of state-mandated sexual harassment training. However, if an individual can establish that he or she does not supervise, direct, or evaluate the work of one or more employees or student employees (including TA's, RA's, casuals, or temps), that person may be exempted from the training requirement. In this case, the relevant HR personnel should send a short note to shpo-training@stanford.edu to confirm the employee's non-supervisory status.
Faculty/Staff on Sabbatical or Leave: YES, WITHIN 90 DAYS OF THEIR RETURN
After a sabbatical or other type of leave, a faculty or staff member must complete the training within 90 days of the return to work. Notification to sign up will be sent by email.
