Abi Liu/ Aquatics Director:

Abi started her swimming career when she was eight years old, in a small town in southern China. Her first coach instilled in her the importance and value of technique. Due to the benefit she received from that, it has become the central focus of her coaching philosophy.

At 13, after winning the Junior Nationals in 1989, she was recruited by the Chinese National Team, the youngest swimmer on the team at the time. During the seven years in Beijing, she worked with some of the most respected coaches in the world, including the former head coach of the Chinese National team Zhao Ge. The hard work paid off, Abi was one of the top swimmers in China. She won the National Champs; was a record holder in the 200 meter backstroke; silver medalist in the Asia Games, 1994; Winner of the 1993 FINA world cup; and ranked 9th in the world in the 200 meter backstroke.

In her role as a coach, Abi strongly believes in technical work, and encourages swimmers to pursue their personal goals. Her workouts are technique based fun activities. As a result, her swimmers have achieved: Junior Olympic Champions, Far Western Champions, Western Zone Champions, Outstanding Swimmers of Pacific Swimming, National Age Group Top 16 Rankings and National Age Group Record Holders.

Abi has a degree in Kinesiology. She is very much interested in the exercise physiology and the science of body movements. As a part of her continuing education Abi is a certified level 4 coach from American Swimming Coaches Association.
