Can Freshman bring a car to campus?

Freshmen may not bring cars to campus. Stanford offers several outstanding alternative transportation programs for getting around campus and to local shopping and entertainment destinations. Students who can demonstrate a compelling need or who would suffer undue hardship under this policy may apply for a waiver. Waivers are reviewed by a committee and will be kept to an absolute minimum. You can obtain information about waivers from the Parking & Transportation Services website or by calling them directly. Requests for waivers usually have to be submitted in early August; check its website for the 2005 date.

Are Freshman required to live on campus?

"The University considers the residential component of your education so important that you are required to live on campus as a freshman or first-year transfer student. The Residential Education program at Stanford provides undergraduates with a small-community experience within the context of a large research university. Its essential conviction is that living and learning should be integrated, not separate; that formal teaching, informal learning, and personal support are integral to a Stanford education. Residential Education extends the classroom into the residences and complements the academic curriculum with activities and experiences essential to your preparation for a life of leadership, intellectual engagement, citizenship, and service." What is a Leave of Absence?

Students are permitted to take a leave of absence for personal and educational reasons. Leaves may be granted for up to one academic year. Students may request one additional year of leave. Students must apply for a leave prior to the term for which they do not intend. Students should discuss whether taking a leave from their studies at Stanford is an appropriate course of action with their academic advisor or with an advisor in Undergraduate Advising Center. International students should also consult with staff in the Bechtel International Center about whether their immigration status will permit them to take a leave without jeopardizing their student status.

Flyer Policy

Distribution of Publications in the Residences

Alcohol Policy

The University Policy on Controlled Substances and Alcohol states: It is the policy of Stanford University to maintain a drug-free workplace and campus. The unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession and/or use of controlled substances or the unlawful possession, use or distribution of alcohol. is prohibited on the Stanford campus, in the workplace or as a part of any of the university’s activities. The workplace and campus are presumed to include all Stanford premises where the activities of the university are conducted. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary sanctions up to and including termination of employment or expulsion of students. Violations may also be referred to the appropriate authorities for prosecution. California law makes it illegal for persons under 21 years of age to drink alcohol. It is also illegal to buy or serve alcohol to anyone under 21. Stanford is not a sanctuary from laws related to drinking, and university policy reflects California law. While sensitive to the concerns that are unique to a college campus, Stanford’s Department of Public Safety can and will act to enforce the drinking age requirement.

How do I go about finding information about the Housing Draw?

You should visit the Housing Assignment Services web page at Application Process: The Draw

How do I get my room assignment?

Specific housing assignments are listed on Axess immediately following the Draw. For most undergraduate residences, however, an in-house Draw occurs which determines the particular room you will be assigned for the upcoming academic year. In-house Draw practices tend to vary from residence to residence - especially Row Houses and/or other undergraduate residences with priority agreements. For more information on in-house draw dates and policies, contact your Resident Student Affairs Specialist (RSAS) for the residence complex in which you will reside.

I want to change my room assignment. Where do I go?

If you have questions or concerns about your specific room assignment, contact your Residence Student Affairs Specialist (RSAS) in your residence field office.

Where do I go to discuss a roommate conflict or switch?

The first step in the process of dealing with a roommate conflict is to first bring the situation to the attention of your RA. If you, your RA, and your roommate are unable to make progress in your conflict, then your case will be taken to your Resident Fellows (RFs) or Supervisor of Suites/Row RAs. Again, if conflict is not resolved with the assistance of the RA and the RFs, the case will be brought to your Residence Dean (RD). Only the RDs can authorize a roommate switch outside of your residence.

I was charged for damage to my room on my University Bill. Where do I go? Whom should I call?

If you have a specific question or complaint about damage to your room or a charge for damage appears on your University bill, contact your Housing Service Center for your residence complex.

If no one is identified for damages assessed in common areas (lounges, computer clusters), the house will be billed for the damage and the charge will be pro-rated to everyone in the residence.

Recipients have 30 days after the date of the billing in which to pay or challenge the bill. If you plan to be away from your home during the summer, make sure someone attends to any billing you may receive. Any bill not arbitrated within 30 days of issuance is no longer subject to review. Students with unpaid damage bills will have a hold placed on their registration or diploma. Charges will not be waived if damages are accidental -- it is our assumption that damages are usually unintended. However, in addition to charges being levied for damage, disciplinary action will be taken if it turns out that damages were willfully caused.
