On This PageDegree Progress Information (Undergraduate)The Office of the University Registrar assists in monitoring your completion of University minimum progress requirements toward the undergraduate degree. After the end of each quarter, your academic record is reviewed by the Academic Senate Subcommittee on Academic Standing to determine whether or not the University’s minimum progress requirements have been satisfactorily completed. All undergraduates registered at Stanford are considered to be in good standing for the purposes of enrollment certification and athletic participation. Minimum Progress Information (Undergraduate)You are expected to register for a minimum of 12 units each quarter. In addition, you are required to:
Satisfying these requirements each quarter satisfies the University’s minimum progress requirements for undergraduates and will mean that you are in good academic standing. If you do not meet these requirements in any given quarter, you will be placed on probation. Students are expected to plan an academic program so that will complete the 180 units required for graduation in four years (12 quarters), including the requirements for a major and the General Education, Writing, and Language Requirements. Probation (Undergraduate)What does probation mean?Probation is intended as a warning. If you
If you are placed on probation, you will receive a letter from Undergraduate Advising and Research regarding your status. A copy of the letter will also be sent to your academic adviser or major department. In addition, your probation status will be notated on your unofficial transcript (probation status is not noted on your official University transcript). What do I have to do?You should arrange to meet with the professional advisers at Undergraduate Advising and Research: Sweet Hall, First Floor; vpue-advising@stanford.edu; 650-723-2426; you may schedule an appointment with a UAR adviser online by clicking here. Other resources include:
You will remain on probation for your next three consecutive quarters of enrollment. If you are away from Stanford on an official leave of absence or another reason for any one of those quarters, your three consecutive quarters of probation will begin again upon your return to Stanford. In each quarter that you are on probation, you are required to:
In addition, during your first quarter on probation you are required to meet with a professional adviser at Undergraduate Advising and Research to review your academic experiences and map out your academic plans. You may schedule an appointment with a UAR adviser online by clicking here, or by visiting their office in Sweet Hall, first floor, or by calling (650) 723-2426. If you complete these requirements, at the end of the three quarters you will be removed from probation. If you are unable to meet the minimum progress requirements for students on probation, you may be placed on provisional registration or suspended. Provisional Registration (Undergraduate)What does provisional registration mean?Provisional registration is intended as a second and more serious warning. If you:
If you are placed on provisional registration, you will receive a letter from Undergraduate Advising and Research regarding your status; this letter will also be sent to your academic adviser or major department. In addition, your provisional registration status will be notated on your unofficial transcript (probation status is not noted on your official University transcript). What do I have to do?There are many people and offices at Stanford who are available to help you get back on track to making satisfactory academic progress. These include:
The resources noted above are able to discuss the opportunities and implications of such a decision with you. You will remain on provisional registration for your next three consecutive quarters of enrollment. If you are away from Stanford on an official leave of absence or another reason for any one of those quarters, your three consecutive quarters of probation will begin again upon your return to Stanford. In each quarter that you are on provisional registration, you are required to:
In addition, during your first quarter on provisional registration you are required to meet with a professional adviser at Undergraduate Advising and Research to review your academic experiences and map out your academic plans. You may schedule an appointment with a UAR adviser online by clicking here, or by visiting their office in Sweet Hall, first floor, or by calling (650) 723-2426. If you complete these requirements, at the end of the three quarters you will be removed from provisional registration and no longer subject to special monitoring of your academic record by the Subcommittee on Academic Standing. If you are unable to meet the minimum progress requirements for students on probation, you will be suspended. Acdemic Suspension (Undergraduate)What does academic suspension mean?If you do not meet the minimum progress requirements outlined above for students on suspension or provisional registration, the Subcommittee on Academic Standing may place you on academic suspension. Generally, first-time academic suspension is for one (1) academic year (4 quarters). You will be unable to enroll in classes at Stanford until the suspension has been lifted. You will have been notified during previous quarters that you were not making satisfactory academic progress. You will have also been informed that you needed to:
If you do not meet these standards, the Subcommittee may decide to impose the sanction of suspension. Other concerned University departments will be notified of your suspension. These include Undergraduate Advising and Research, the Dean of Students, the Office of Residential Education, Student Financial Services, and the Financial Aid Office (if applicable). Academic suspension means that through the end of the one- (1) or three- (3) year suspension period, you are ineligible for the privileges associated with registration—privileges that include living in University housing. If you are currently assigned to a campus residence, your housing assignment will be canceled. What do I have to do?Students who are suspended choose to pursue many types of opportunities while away from the University. Some students decide to continue their education at another accredited institution. Stanford University allows students on academic suspension to enroll at other accredited institutions while away from the University and to transfer allowable earned credit back to Stanford. Other students decide to pursue full- or part-time employment opportunities or volunteer opportunities closer to home. Whatever opportunities you decide to pursue while away from Stanford, it is the Subcommittee on Academic Standing’s desire that you use the time productively as an opportunity to demonstrate your readiness to return to Stanford at the end of the suspension period.
