New Academic Deadlines, 2009-10

The Academic Senate has approved a new set of academic deadlines designed to expand the time allotted to teaching, to improve potential for student advising, and to reduce the number of academic deadlines from five to three. These deadlines come into effect at the beginning of the 2009-10 academic year.

Axess Opens for Enrollment

Autumn: August 1 • Winter: October 25 • Spring: February 7 • Summer: April 11

  • Autumn Quarter: Axess will now open for Autumn Quarter enrollment on August 1, two weeks earlier than in previous years. Courses and scheduled classes will be viewable for the entire academic year.
  • Winter and Spring Quarters: Axess will open at the beginning of the 6th week of the previous quarter, four weeks earlier than in previous quarters.
  • Summer Quarter: no change from previous years

First Day of Classes

Autumn: September 21 • Winter: January 4 • Spring: March 29 • Summer: June 21

The first day of classes in all four quarters will now be the Monday of the first week of classes. This will add a teaching day in Winter, Spring, and Summer quarters.

Preliminary Study List Deadline

Autumn: September 21 • Winter: January 4 • Spring: March 29 • Summer: June 21

Students must now be "in status" by 5:00 p.m. on the first day of classes in each quarter. This means that, at the end of the first day of classes in each quarter, an undergraduate must be enrolled in no fewer than 12 units, and a graduate student must be enrolled in no fewer than 8 units. Students approved for a Special Registration Status (13th quarter, PSO, reduced course load, graduation quarter, TGR, or graduate tuition adjustment) must be enrolled in no fewer than the minimum units applicable to that status. Students not "in status" by 5:00 p.m. on the first day of classes are subject to a $200 late study list fee.

Final Study List Deadline

Autumn: October 9 • Winter: January 22 • Spring: April 16 • Summer: July 2

Students may add and drop classes until 5:00 p.m. on Friday of the third week of classes. (In other words, the add and drop deadlines are now combined into one Final Study List Deadline.) This will also be the deadline for students to adjust units on variable-unit courses. Students may continue to withdraw from courses through the Course Withdrawal Deadline. The Summer Quarter Final Study List Deadline is at 5:00 p.m. on the Friday of the second week of classes; different deadlines may apply in cases of Summer classes with non-standard meeting schedules.

Course Withdrawal and Change of Grading Basis Deadlines

Autumn: November 13 • Winter: February 26 • Spring: May 21 • Summer: July 30

These two deadlines now occur at 5:00 p.m. on the Friday of the eighth week of classes. This provides an additional two weeks for students to change their grading basis in courses which offer that option. Courses dropped after the Final Study List Deadline but before the Course Withdrawal Deadline remain on the transcript with the notation of 'W' (meaning Withdrew) in the grade column. The Summer Quarter Course Withdrawal and Change of Grading Basis Deadlines are at 5:00 p.m. on the Friday of the sixth week of classes; different deadlines may apply in cases of Summer classes with non-standard meeting schedules.
