| Walk-Ins |
 |
 |
| Stanford student at New Student Orientation |
In the third round of the application process for housing (after the Draw and Waitlists), "Walk-ins" is an assignment period in which remaining vacancies in University housing are available to unassigned single students. Students may attend Walk-in meetings at the Housing Assignments Office where remaining vacancies are offered according to a student’s position on the Waitlist. |
| Round 3: Walk-ins |
Who can participate?
- Students who are enrolled and in good academic and financial standing with the University.
- Students who were not assigned after a Waitlist round.
- Students who have not yet applied for housing.
- Students who previously withdrew an application or cancelled an assignment.
- Students seeking reassignment may also participate in Walk-ins, though students without University housing have priority.
(For detailed information go to Reassignments below.)
Process
- Walk-in assignments take place each quarter.
- If you can’t attend a Walk-in meeting in person, file a Proxy Form.
- After the initial meeting, daily Walk-in meetings are conducted
Monday - Friday at Housing Assignments, Harold Module, 630 Serra Street, Suite 110.

Guaranteed Assignment vs. Priority for Walk-ins
Undergraduates are ensured a housing assignment by the end of the first week of classes as long as they have met ALL four of the following criteria:
- they applied for housing by the Waitlist deadline,
- have guaranteed years remaining,
- indicated that they are willing to live in any residence on their Draw and Waitlist applications, and
- they participated in Walk-ins (either in person or by proxy).
Your Chances for Assignment/Reassignment
Housing Assignments cannot predict which residences will have space available in advance of a Walk-in meeting. Your chances for assignment during Walk-ins depend on
- the number of spaces that become available, as well as
- the number of students who attend Walk-ins
- and their preferences.
Procedures for the Walk-in Meetings
- At the meeting, we provide a list of available spaces, as well as charges (including rent, house dues, and required meal plans).
- We call students forward according to the Walk-in position lists.
- Please keep track of which spaces are remaining, and be ready to choose your space when your name is called.
- When you are called, you can choose from any available space that is posted.
- If you take too long, we ask you to step back and let the next student choose.
- If you don't want any of the spaces, you may leave. While you will retain your position on the list, you will no longer be guaranteed an assignment for that term.
NOTE: After the first week of the quarter, students taking Walk-in assignments must WAIT 48 hours after completing their assignment forms before moving in; this allows time for the residence offices to notify current residents they should expect a new roommate. |

| Reassignment Procedures |
We will post a notice on our web site when reassignments begin. Typically this will be around the third week for Autumn- and Winter terms, and mid-March for Spring term.
- Complete a Reassignment Request form and submit it to Housing Assignments, 630 Serra Street, Suite 110 (Harold Module), or fax to (650)736-1297.
- All Undergradute Students will be required to have their current Residence Dean approve their Reassignment Request. Print an Undergraduate Reassignment Permission Form from our website and have your Residence Dean sign it.
- Return the signed forms to our office (Harold Module, 630 Serra Street, Suite 110) and participate in the Walk-in assignment meetings.
- If demand from students without campus housing is not met, it is possible that reassignments may not be offered
NOTE:
1. Reassignments are not offered for the Summer term.
2. The administrative fee for taking a reassignment is $200. |
| Position List |
Undergraduate students participating in Walk-ins or Reassignments will be ranked by the following categories, and within each group, by the date they requested assignment (if the student applied after the Waitlist round).
- Students with Guaranteed Years remaining, who applied for the Waitlist, and were not assigned, in Draw-number order
- Students with Guaranteed Years remaining, who did not apply for the Waitlist, and do not have on-campus housing
- Students without Guaranteed Years remaining, who applied for the Waitlist, and were not assigned, in Draw-number order
- Students without Guaranteed Years remaining, who did not apply for the Waitlist, and do not have on-campus housing
- Students with University housing contracts seeking reassignment to another residence
NOTE: Don’t give up if you’re not assigned at the first Walk-in meeting. Daily Walk-in meetings are held through the fifth week of the quarter. Often spaces become available later due to students changing their plans about housing or going away/taking leaves of absence.
Residence Agreement
If you take a housing assignment at Walk-ins, you are accepting the terms of the Residence Agreement.
- This is a binding, legal contract that obligates you to live in University housing for the remainder of the academic year as long as you are an enrolled student.
- YOU WILL BE HELD TO RENT FOR THE ENTIRE ACADEMIC YEAR.
House Requirements
We advise you to research individual house requirements during your search for housing options. Currently, undergraduate residences require
- house dues and telecommunication fees
- and a meal plan (except Mirrielees and Oak Creek).
You may also have to sign a supplemental house agreement.
Room and Roommate Assignments
Specific room/roommate assignments will be made by your local residence office shortly before you move in. (For detailed information, see Once You’re Assigned.)
Cancellation
You may be eligible to cancel your Walk-in assignment for a $200 administrative fee ONLY IF you have not picked up the room/apartment key(s). Please contact Housing Assignments for details.
NOTE: For more info on Cancellations, see Once You’re Assigned.
Unassigned Students Must Re-Join Waitlist
- You do not stay on the Waitlist automatically.
- If you do not take a space during the Walk-in period, you must re-join the next Waitlist if you still wish to be considered for housing the next quarter.
- If you were unassigned on the current Waitlist, you will only retain your current application number by joining the Waitlist by the next application deadline.
