Waitlists

In the second round of the application process for housing (after the Draw, single, undergraduate students take part in “Waitlists.” This assignment round is held prior to each quarter. When students join by the Waitlist deadline, they preserve their housing guarantee (if they choose “any residence” on the application) and stay on the list for the quarter in which they applied. If for any reason they do not receive an assignment, students should participate in the third round, Walk-ins, for on-campus housing.

Round 2: Waitlists
Who Participates?
  1. Students who are enrolled and in good academic and financial standing with the University can participate.
  2. Students who enter the Draw for Autumn Quarter housing but don’t get in the first-round assignment pool automatically go on the Autumn Waitlist.
  3. Students who submit a late application between the Draw deadline and the Waitlist deadline will go on the Autumn Waitlist.
  4. Students who apply for assignment for Winter- or Spring Quarter are put on the Waitlist for that quarter.
You may also join the Waitlist
  • for Autumn Quarter (through Axess) if you were assigned in the Draw, but not to your first housing choice, and you would like to request a reassignment to another residence.
  • if you wish to transfer from one category of housing to another due to a change in marital or family status; in this case, you may join the Graduate housing Waitlist.

NOTE: If you remain unassigned after the Waitlist round, you should participate in the Walk-ins assignment round for that quarter. If you are still unassigned at the end of the Walk-ins period, you must rejoin the Waitlist for the next quarter by the published deadline if you still wish to be considered for assignment.

NOTE: 1. When a student joins the Waitlist, it is for a specific quarter only.
2. In order to be guaranteed housing by Friday of the first week of classes, you must apply by the Waitlist deadline for that quarter and be willing to live in any residence for which you qualify.

Waitlist Process

  1. Waitlist assignments follow procedures similar to the Draw (see the Draw page for explanation of the Draw, Tier levels, and assignment process).
  2. An assignable pool is determined by the number of housing spaces available, considering vacancies and (during the July Waitlist round only) spaces that may open up because of reassignments.
  3. Students who have already been assigned housing and are seeking reassignment to another residence are automatically placed in the assignable pool.
  4. Unassigned students (from the Draw) are placed in the Waitlist assignable pool, first on the basis of their guarantee status (guaranteed students before unguaranteed students), and then on the basis of their application number as space allows.
  5. If you are interested in focus houses, theme houses, or co-ops you must meet the qualifications of the house and/or agree to certain terms of living in the house when you list it on your application.
  6. Next, you are assigned by your application number, the given number of spaces available, and the competing demand of other students.

NOTE: For information on seeking alternative housing / reassignments, see Once You’re Assigned.

Application Numbers

Retaining / Random / Sequential

  • If you enter the Draw and do not refuse an assignment, you retain your first-round (random) application number from the Draw for the Waitlist.
  • If you do not enter an application for Autumn housing, but join the Waitlist by the May deadline for assignment beginning Winter- or Spring Quarter instead, you receive a random number from the same pool of numbers as Draw participants.
  • All other students joining the Waitlist after the May deadline receive a sequential application number above 3500 according to the date they join.
  • If you join the Waitlist for a given quarter and are not assigned for that quarter, you retain your application number if you join the Waitlist for a subsequent quarter within that year.
  • Sequential numbers are assigned at the end of the application period after all applications have been processed; therefore, they are not available until assignments are announced.
  • If you refuse a housing assignment and then join a Waitlist, you lose your application number and are placed at the bottom of the Waitlist with a worse number according to the date you join.
  • Group members must either all have random numbers (from the Draw) or sequential numbers (given after the Draw deadline).

NOTE: 1. It is your responsibility to check Axess to see if you have been assigned. 2. Click on Once You’re Assigned for room/roommate information, to change status for housing, or to withdraw or cancel an assignment.

What if you Miss the Waitlist Deadline?
If you miss the Waitlist deadline you have unfortunately lost your guarantee of housing. You can still apply for on-campus housing through the Walk-ins process. Walk-in meetings take place each quarter at the Housing Assignments office. See the Undergraduate Calendar for dates and deadlines.
