Draw 2009 Results

The results of the Student Housing Undergraduate Draw have been posted outside each Housing Front Desk and will be released in Axess at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2009.

More upperclass students will be provided with premier housing in the form of singles or two-room doubles this year, due to the implementation of the Housing Master Plan.  These changes have moved several large residences into competition with the Row Houses for popularity.  Branner, Mirrielees, Toyon, Lagunita, Roble, and Crothers Singles had cut offs above several Row Houses.  The Row Houses and Co-ops split between first and second tier with a few moving into the third tier, which should alleviate concerns that no sophomores would be living on the Row. Toyon filled with very low second tier numbers, resulting in the house being completely filled with sophomores.  The test program for Xanadu and Crothers where students could rank individual room types appears to have been very popular, and will be investigated as an addition to the entire Draw for next year.  Cut-off information for individual residences and other Draw statistics are available online.

An additional 86 upperclass students entered the Draw this year for a total of 4084 students who applied for housing for the 2009-10 academic year.  Even with the extra 111 spaces provided by the Housing Master Plan, there were 89 guaranteed students unassigned.  This is down from last year and it is felt that the majority of these students will be placed via the waiting list or in walk-in rounds over the summer.

Under the guaranteed housing policy, all of the guaranteed students who have not yet been assigned to specific residences will be offered housing by the end of the first week of Autumn Quarter.  Additional spaces become available over the summer as students change their enrollment and housing plans, or alternate solutions will be offered.  Unassigned students should join the Autumn Waiting List in Axess by July 5, 2009.  Students who received an assignment, but wish to be reassigned, should not cancel their current assignment, but can request to be reassigned via the Autumn Waiting List in Axess.

Residents who have received assignments do not need to accept the assignment in Axess. By signing the Residence Agreement, you have already accepted your housing assignment.  After being assigned to a residence, you will need to participate in the in-house draw to identify a roommate and select a room.  Please see In-house Draw Procedure 2009-10 for detailed guidelines, and the Schedule of Room Assignment Meetings for meeting information.

Statistics on the outcome of this year’s Draw are available online.

Draw 2009-10 Changes At a Glance
Application Process
Three tiers of Draw numbers replace the former "preferred/unpreferred" system
Tier 1 - 0001 to 1000 – Can only be used once
Tier 2 - 1001 to 2000
Tier 3 - 2001 to 3000 – Must be used at least once
Transition program for students who've already used some of their preferred/unpreferred years: First preferred year counts as Tier 2, Second preferred year counts as Tier 1, Unpreferred counts as Tier 3
Sophomores are limited to lowest two tiers of Draw numbers
Draw numbers and historical cut-off levels will not be published in advance of the draw because applicants are able to list all housing choices
The deadlines for applying as a group vs. individually are now the same
In-house Draw processes will now be based on class year and Draw number
Co-ed groups will not be separated by gender in the Draw process
Special Program Houses
Theme and Focus house applications no longer require the collection of priorities, but rather one applies in the Draw and agrees to the house requirements at the time of application
Theme and Focus houses will be able to pre-assign a core group of students to support their theme or focus (previously only available to academic theme houses)
Branner will become a Public Service Focus house. Other Focus and Theme houses will remain the same, with the exception of Arroyo and Naranja, which will no longer be Focus houses. Co-ops will remain the same
Re-configuration of the Residences
Crothers Hall will be an upperclass residence (and consists of two former graduate residences: Crothers and Crothers Memorial Halls)
Branner is transitioning from being an all freshman house to an upperclass Focus house with premier housing consisting mostly of singles and two-room doubles
Wilbur and Stern will be all freshmen houses with the exception of Zapata and Okada, which will remain four-class academic theme houses
Lagunita freshmen will now be in one-room doubles or triples. Naranja and Adelfa will be three-class houses, where all but 10 students will be housed in singles
Mirrielees will now house students in single rooms – two-bedroom apartments will house two people, three-bedroom apartments will house three people
Toyon will continue as a sophomore house and will consist almost entirely of two-room doubles (subject to change dependent upon demand)
Gender-neutral Housing
Enchanted Broccoli Forest and Governor’s Corner Suites are being added to the list of residences where Gender-neutral assignments are possible
Billing, Rent and Meal Plan Changes
Undergraduate students will now pay the same housing rate per quarter (early arrival or late-stay fees still apply)
TOC penalty dates have been changed to better reflect the calendar. TOC and Cancellation fees are increasing to $100, $200, $300 and $400
Mirrielees students will have the option of taking on a specially-priced meal plan
Toyon and Crothers students will be required to purchase Stanford Dining meal plans, and the Toyon Eating Clubs will be managed by Stanford Dining

Application Process
  1. Application Deadline: Undergraduate Students – drawing in a group or by themselves – have one application deadline: May 10, 2009 at 6:00 p.m.
  2. List Every Residence: Students will be able to list every undergraduate residence they qualify for on their draw applications. This eliminates the need for students to get their draw numbers before submitting their final list of choices.
  3. Draw numbers will no longer be announced in advance of the draw, and historical draw cut-off numbers will no longer be published.
  4. Tier System: Students will choose amongst 3 Tiers of Draw numbers when applying for undergraduate housing:
    • Tier one (1 to 1000) can be selected at most once.
    • Tier three (2001 to 3000) must be selected at least once in the three years a student draws for housing.
  5. Mixed-gender Draw groups can now stay together through the use of group retention.
  6. Students will be able to apply for both a residence and room type in two undergraduate residences.
    • Students applying for Crothers will be able to apply for singles and one- room doubles.
    • Students applying for Xanadu will be able to apply for singles, one-room doubles, two-room doubles, one-room triples, two- to three-room triples, and one- to three-room quads. (The specific rooms within these room types will be assigned at the in-house draw.)

Special Program Houses
  1. Arroyo House in Wilbur Hall, and Casa Naranja in Lagunita Court will no longer be Focus houses.
  2. Branner Hall will become a public service Focus house.
  3. Students will no longer need to earn priorities for Cooperative Houses, Theme Houses or Focus Houses. (All students who meet the pre-requisites for these residences and agree to meet the program requirements for the house may apply for these residences. See Requirements for Listing Theme Houses, Focus Houses, or Co-Ops on Draw Applications).
  4. All Cooperative, Theme, and Focus Houses have the option to assign a core group of people to their houses for the coming year.
    • Applications for pre-assignment are due to Residential Education on April 22.
    • Any student not selected for pre-assignment can still list the house on their Draw applications as long as they meet the pre-requisites and agree to meet the program requirements for the house.
  5. Any student assigned to a Cooperative, Theme, or Focus house who does not meet the pre-requisites of the house will have their assignment cancelled and will need to participate in the next assignment round in order to get housing.

Residence Configurations

Several undergraduate residences will be reconfigured this year in conjunction with the Housing Master Plan. Occupancy of many residences has been reduced, and several residences will experience changes in the mix of students assigned to them.

Residence Halls

Stern and
Wilbur Halls
Will be freshmen-only residences (with the exception of Casa Zapata and Okada Ethnic Theme Houses).
Branner Hall Will be a three-class residence (sophomore, junior and senior) and will have its occupancy reduced in order to create more singles and two-room doubles.
Lagunita Court Occupancies will be reduced in order to create more singles for upper-class students.
Toyon Hall (depending on Draw demand) May have its occupancy reduced in order to create more singles and two-room doubles. Any student applying for Toyon should assume that the occupancy will remain the same as it is now.
Apartments
Mirrielees
Apartments
Occupancy will be reduced in order to give a private sleeping space to each resident. Most Mirrielees apartments will accommodate 2 students, however, nine three-bedroom apartments will have 3 students assigned to them.
Oak Creek
Apartment
Complex
Oak Creek will be a residence choice only for the Winter- and Spring Waitlists.

Row

Grove Lasuen will become the Row Administrative Center and will no longer house students. Additional spaces will be added to Grove Mayfield where the Row Residential Education office is now located.

Theme Houses
The Ethnic Theme Houses in Casa Zapata and Okada will have their occupancy reduced in order to create more singles for the upperclass students assigned to the residence.

Gender-neutral Housing

Permanent Program
The Gender-neutral Pilot project has been made permanent. The Suites in Governor’s Corner and the Enchanted Broccoli Forest Cooperative House have been added for the coming year.

Mixed-gender Groups
The Draw program now allows mixed-gender groups to stay together through the use of group retention. Students must still list the same residences in the same order and activate group retention in order to be kept together.

Billing, Rent & Meal Plan

All Students – Flat Rent Price
In order to help students better plan their budgets for each quarter, we are moving to flat pricing for rent. Students will pay the same rent for Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters. (Dining charges will still vary with the length of the quarter.)

Co-ops, Self-ops, and Greeks – Rent & Dining charges in Axess
Students living in Co-ops, Self-ops and Greek houses will now be charged for both rent and dining through their Axess billing statement.

Mirrielees – New Meal Plan Option
Stanford Dining is offering a new meal plan option for students living in Mirrielees. The Mirrielees Apartment Meal Plan Option will include 5 All-You-Care-To-Eat Meals/wk & $150 Cardinal Dollars/Year, for an annual cost of $2199. Students assigned to Mirrielees for Autumn Quarter can sign up for this plan after their Draw assignments are announced in Axess.

Construction and Capital Improvement

Online Updates
Current information and updates are available on the Construction and Renovation page.

Currently
No undergraduate residences are scheduled to be down for Capital Improvement during the 2009-10 academic year.

Future Noise
New construction, other major projects, and unforeseen repair projects could cause increased noise around nearby residences and throughout housing areas.

Residence Impact
Continual work may occur in and around your residence prior to, and up to a year after, major construction projects. (While all possible measures will be taken to minimize the impact, any student moving into these areas should be prepared to accept the unavoidable aspects of life in a neighborhood under construction.)

Bob Capital Improvement for Bob has been postponed and will not affect assignment for the 2009-10 academic year.
Munger The Munger Graduate Residence is scheduled to be completed in time to open Autumn 2009. Construction and landscaping activities will extend into the 2009-10 academic year.
(This construction will affect students in Stern and Wilbur Halls, Phi Psi, and Mars. You may view this web site regarding ongoing work: http://mungerhousing.stanford.edu/

)
Muwekma-ta-ruk
and Columbae

The Law School Academic Building Project, slated to start this summer and run throughout the 2009-10 academic year, will be taking place directly behind these houses.  For more information on this project, please visit:  http://lbre.stanford.edu/dpm/law_school_building
