| Eligibility |
Matriculated Students
(students admitted to a Stanford degree program)
Single students can apply for Undergraduate housing for the academic year if they
- are currently enrolled at Stanford,
- and/or eligible for enrollment the term for which they are applying.
Exceptions
Students staying after graduation can file a Post-graduation Quarter petition for Winter- or Spring term immediately after their degree is conferred. Petitions must be filed on time and are granted with the following considerations:
- That all enrolled students can be accommodated;
- the date and order in which petitions are received;
- the reason for staying.
It is very unlikely that petitions will be approved for Winter Quarter.
NOTE: Students interested in the Registrar’s Graduation Quarter and/or Permit for Services Only status, see the Registrar’s forms page.
Non-Matriculated Students
(students not pursuing a Stanford degree)
Non-matriculated students are eligible for single-student undergraduate housing while they are enrolled and after all matriculated students have been accommodated. These students normally are visiting scholars or enrolled for summer-session courses.
Holds and No Eligibility
If you have active enrollment holds, or you are not eligible to enroll by the date your assignment begins, you will be unable to move into your residence. If you cease to be enrolled while in residence, you must file a Termination of Occupancy and move out of university housing.

| Guaranteed Housing Plan For Undergraduate Students |
Overview
The Guaranteed Housing Plan was established to ensure that the limited supply of housing is predictably and equitably allocated among all students. The basic mechanism of the plan is the housing guarantee, which represents a pledge of University housing. The guarantee applies to all University housing, including residential fraternities and sororities. Under the plan, residential fraternities and sororities assume the responsibility of providing guaranteed housing to their incoming and current members based on their Housing Preference Policy (HPP).
Guidelines for Housing Guarantee
- A guarantee constitutes a pledge of housing if you apply for undergraduate housing by the Waitlist deadlines for Autumn- Winter- or Spring Quarter and are willing to live in any residence for which you are eligible.
- A guarantee secures a housing assignment by the end of the first week of classes for the term you are applying. It does not ensure assignment to a specific residence or assignment in the first round of the process, but you will receive an assignment by the end of the first week of classes.
- In the event that there is not enough space in undergraduate residences to accommodate all guaranteed students, some undergraduate students may be assigned to vacancies in graduate residences or University-assigned, off-campus complexes.
- Undergraduate students are guaranteed four years of housing including their freshman year. (Note: Freshmen and transfer students are required to live on campus their first year.)
- Transfer students receive two or three guaranteed years based on their entering-class standing as determined by their final transfer credit evaluation (including any changes made after enrolling for the academic year):
- Transfer students entering with sophomore class standing (less than 85 transfer units accepted for Stanford credit) receive three guaranteed years;
- those who enter as juniors (at least 85 transfer units accepted for Stanford credit) receive two guaranteed years.
What you Must do to Exercise your Guarantee:
- You must file an application by the Waitlist Deadline for the term in which you are interested.
- You must select "assign me to any residence for which I am eligible" as your final choice on the Draw application or Waiting List in order to be guaranteed an assignment by the end of the first week of classes for any given quarter.
What Counts as using a Guaranteed Year?
- One guaranteed year represents a maximum of three consecutive quarters – Autumn through Spring – in a single academic year.
- A guaranteed year cannot be used in partial amounts. Once you apply for housing, you have used a guaranteed year regardless of whether or not you ever move in and/or stay in housing for the entire year.
- If you live in University housing Autumn Quarter and you go overseas or stop out Winter Quarter, your guarantee remains effective for Spring Quarter if you join the Waitlist by the deadline and have not refused a housing assignment.
- You use a guaranteed year if you live in any campus residence or off-campus subsidized residence including undergraduate housing or graduate housing. This includes fraternities, sororities, Chi Theta Chi, or Sigma Chi.
- You use a guaranteed year if you receive an exempt housing assignment including
- all residence staff,
- house officers,
- students with disability/medical accommodations,
- special case assignments,
- and pre-assignments.
Lose or Forfeit a Guaranteed Year
- If you apply for housing but you are not assigned in the first round, you are expected to join the Waiting List and/or attend Walk-ins (as applicable) in order to continue to be guaranteed housing. If at any point you drop out of the process, you lose your guaranteed year.
- If you cancel a housing application or assignment, or you do not move into your residence (including a fraternity or sorority), you forfeit a year of guaranteed housing.

Petitions Regarding Housing Guarantee |
If you decide to stop out prior to taking occupancy in your assigned residence, you may file a petition at Housing Assignments to have your guarantee reinstated for a later quarter or academic year. Petitions, to have guaranteed years and/or tier status reinstated, must be received by Housing Assignments by the deadline to join the Waitlist for the quarter for which you are applying (October 23, 2009 for Winter Quarter and February 5, 2010 for Spring Quarter).
NOTE: If you are returning for a later quarter in the same academic year, you may also petition to retain your original draw number. |
