Entering the Lottery
Housing assignments in the summer are made on the basis of a computerized lottery. Students who submit an application by the Summer Lottery deadline are given a random application number between 1 and 2000, which will determine their rank in the lottery program. If you miss the deadline, you can apply for the Waitlist or participate in Walk-ins. You will have the best chance to get your desired residence by entering the Lottery.
Your assignment depends on
- The residence choices you list on your application.
- Your residence priority.
- Your application number.
- The number of spaces available in the residences that are assigned through the Lottery.
You are assigned to the highest choice that your application number and residence priority will allow, given the number of spaces available and the competing demand of other students. You should not list a choice where you would not accept an assignment. There is no reassignment round for summer housing. (Read about Priorities in the Graduate or Undergraduate Application Process page for details.)
NOTE: Students assigned to Single Graduate, Couples without Children, or Students with Children Housing in Autumn Quarter may be assigned to a summer residence that they did not list as a choice on their application in order to match their summer assignment to their autumn assignment.
Lottery Results in Axess
- The results of the Summer Housing Lottery are announced in Axess.
- Students will see the residence they were assigned to, however, the exact address and apartment number will not be available until the check-in day.
- There will be an in-house draw for room assignments in Single Undergraduate Housing after the Summer Lottery, but these are tentative until check-in.
Responding to Your Assignment
Students do not need to respond to their assignments in Axess after results are announced. By submitting your housing application, you accept the Residence Agreement and agree to its terms. This agreement is valid once you have been assigned a space in University housing and continues for the entire length of the agreement period.

Waitlist Assignment Process
Assignment to housing in the Summer Waitlist round is made with the same computerized lottery system used for Round 1: Summer Lottery. Enrolled students will continue to receive a housing priority, and residence priorities will still be applied. Students who join the Waitlist receive housing assignments depending on the following items:
- residence choices you list on the application
- residence priority
- application number
You are assigned to the highest choice that your application number and residence priority will allow, given the number of spaces available and the competing demand of other students. You are offered an assignment based on the choices listed on your application; therefore, you should not list a choice where you would not accept an assignment. There are no reassignments during the summer term, except for changes in family or marital status.
Match Summer & Autumn Assignment
Students assigned to Single Graduate, Couples without Children or Students with Children Housing in the following Autumn Quarter may be assigned to a summer residence that they did not list as a choice on their application in order to match their summer assignment to their autumn assignment. See the Graduate Student Application Process for details on matching residences.
Who Applies for Waitlist
- If you are not offered an assignment in the Summer Housing Lottery and wish to be reconsidered, you must apply for the Summer Waitlist by the Waitlist application deadline, even if you are guaranteed Summer Housing.
- Applicants who missed the Summer Lottery deadline may also submit an application for the Waitlist.
- If you have had a change in family or marital status since the time you received your summer assignment, you may apply for a different category of housing in the Summer Waitlist, but you must first cancel your summer housing assignment. Cancellation fees will be applied.
Important: You may not join the Summer Waitlist if you already have a summer housing assignment. There are no reassignments for summer housing except for changes in family or marital status.
Application Number
- Students who applied in the Summer Lottery and were unassigned retain their application number if they apply in the Waitlist round.
- Applications received after the Lottery deadline are given sequential numbers greater than 2000 based on the dates received and are added to the Waitlist.
- Students who previously withdrew or cancelled a summer assignment due to a change in family or marital status will receive a new application number as of the Waitlist application submission date.
- Single students who apply in a group will all receive an application number as of the date that the last student in the group submitted the application.
Withdrawals
Just as in the Lottery, there is no financial penalty for withdrawing your Waitlist application by the application deadline. Contact Housing Assignments in writing at housingassignments@lists.stanford.edu if you decide to withdraw your summer housing application. See Graduate or Undergraduate Application Process and Once You’re Assigned for more details on withdrawals and cancellations.

Who Participates
- Single students who are not assigned in the Waitlist round or who have not yet applied for housing may participate in Walk-In Meetings.
- Students not assigned in the Summer Lottery or Waitlist must attend the Walk-in meeting(s) in person, or submit a proxy form designating a representative, if they are still interested in on-campus housing. Participation is not automatic.
- Students who are currently assigned to Couples without Children or Students with Children Housing may participate in the Walk-In Meetings without cancelling your current assignment.
Description of Walk-in Meetings
- Walk-ins begin Tuesday, June 9, and are held Monday - Friday from
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. through Thursday, June 18.
- No walk-ins Friday, June 19.
- On the opening day of residences, Saturday, June 20, walk-ins will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Housing Assignments office.
- Beginning Monday, June 22, walk-ins will take place as necessary from
10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Walk-ins will conclude on Friday, July 24, with the latest move-in date being Friday, July 31, 2009.
In-Person or Proxy
To participate in the Walk-In Meetings, students can either attend a Walk-In meeting in person or submit a proxy form.
- When a student submits a proxy form, he/she is designating a representative to accept housing on his/her behalf.
- Students can either designate Housing Assignments as their representative or name a person who will attend the meeting.
- If a person is named, he/she must be at the Walk-In meeting with photo identification and accept an assignment in order for the student to receive an assignment.
- If Housing Assignments is your designated representative, make sure to rank your residence choices in the space provided on the proxy form.
- You may change your residence choices at any time prior to receiving an assignment by submitting a new proxy form.
- Once a Walk-In assignment is accepted (either by the student or designated representative), there is a $200 fee to cancel it, even if you have not yet taken occupancy of the room. You may, however, withdraw a proxy form at any time prior to an assignment being made without financial penalty.
Process
- During the Walk-In meetings, Housing Assignments will assign any vacancies to eligible and interested students.
- Students are considered for assignment according to their positions on the Waitlist.
- Students who did not receive an assignment during the Waitlist round must participate in Walk-In meetings in order to be considered for an assignment.
- Students who were not on the Waitlist, draw random numbers on the date that they apply (random numbers increase daily after the meetings begin).
- Students who draw random numbers are considered for assignment after all students who were on the Waitlist.
- Enrolled students receive a housing priority at Walk-Ins if space is limited.
- Residence options may be limited during Walk-Ins, so you may not receive your preferred residence or move-in date.
Select Contract Start Date
Students may select their desired contract start date in the Walk-In Meetings. However, the end dates of these contracts remain fixed. (i.e. a student who receives an 8-week summer contract beginning on July 1 will still end the contract on the 8-week contract end date; not 8-weeks from July 1) See summer Contract Rates and Dates for detailed information.

Continuous Assignments
After the Waiting List assignment round, remaining vacancies are offered on a continuous basis to the next eligible couple without children or student with children. Continuous assignments are made from June 5 through July 24, 2009.
To participate in the Continuous Assignments Meetings, students must submit a paper application if they have not yet applied for Couples without Children or Students with Children Housing for summer term. You may change your residence choices at any time by emailing, faxing or mailing a revised list of residence choices to Housing Assignments. We cannot accept changes over the phone.
Position List
Students not assigned in the Waitlist will automatically be added to the Continuous Assignments Position List. If you are on the Position List and are no longer interested in on-campus housing, please contact Housing Assignment so we can remove your name from the Position List. This will help us give accurate information to other couples and students with children waiting for an assignment.
Housing Assignments will maintain a Position List of interested students and offer any apartment that becomes available for summer term to the next eligible student on the position list. This means:
- A student may be offered an apartment not on their list of residence choices. For example, a couple who only applied for a furnished apartment may be offered an unfurnished apartment.
- You may change the furnishings of an apartment offered in the Continuous Assignments Meetings for a one time $200 fee.
- If you choose to refuse an assignment that was not on your residence choices, you maintain your position on the Continuous Assignments Position List.
- If you refuse an apartment that was on your residence choices, you must reapply for Continuous Assignments and you will drop to the bottom of the Position List.
- There is no financial penalty for refusing a Continuous Assignments offer.
Respond to Assignment in Two Days
All assignment offers will be emailed to the student who will have 2 business days to respond to the offer before it is passed on their behalf. Students who do not respond to the offer will have their application withdrawn. They can later submit a new application, though they drop to the bottom of the Position List.
Students with an autumn assignment in Graduate Housing who take a summer Walk-In assignment will have continuous on-campus housing from the start of their summer assignment through autumn.
NOTE: This may be ideal for students who do not want to move in at the beginning of the summer term, but there may be limited availability at the time of Walk-Ins, especially in Undergraduate Housing.
Guidelines on Walk-Ins and Continuous Assignments
- You may withdraw a proxy form at any time prior to an assignment being made without any financial penalty.
- Students who accept a Walk-In assignment must sign a Residence Agreement. Once the assignment is accepted, there is a $200 fee to cancel it (even if the student has not yet signed the Residence Agreement).
- All Continuous Assignments offers for Couples and Students with Children Housing will be emailed to the student. They will have 2 business days to respond in writing (email, fax or postal mail) to the offer.
- Students offered Couples or Students with Children housing through Continuous Assignments may refuse the assignment without any financial penalty.
- Once you pick up the keys to an assignment received in the Walk-Ins or Continuous Assignments meetings, you have taken occupancy of the space and cannot cancel the assignment.
Misrepresentation of Facts
The University may subsequently, and with cause, ask you to provide certifiable documentation of facts detailed on your housing application or on your signed Residence Agreement. Any misrepresentation of facts for housing purposes is deemed a violation of the Residence Agreement and the Fundamental Standard of student conduct and may result in the loss of on-campus housing privileges and/or possible University disciplinary action.
