Introduction |
Student Housing has a strong commitment to the constant betterment of our facilities, with a number of goals in mind, including, but definitely not limited to: student comfort (heating systems, furnishings, carpet, etc.), health and safety (such as seismic upgrades, fire prevention and suppression, etc.), and energy/water use efficiency (low flow fixtures, solar panel trials, etc.).
Below you’ll find information about current and future Student Housing projects, as well as campus projects which directly impact our resident students. Further information about major projects across campus is available on the Land, Building and Resources’ Capital Projects page.
Construction, renovation, and repair projects will necessarily cause increased noise around directly involved and nearby residences, as well as throughout other housing areas. While all possible measures are taken to minimize the impact of these projects, any student moving into or living in affected areas should be prepared to accept the unavoidable aspects of life in a neighborhood under construction. Continual inspections and work may occur in and around your residence prior to and up to a year after a major construction or renovation project. Some students may be required to move to different rooms/apartments or temporarily vacate their current rooms while work is underway. |

Crothers Hall CIP
(Capital Improvement Project)
The newly renovated Crothers buildings will offer advantages for the students who live in them over the years to come. Attention to deferred maintenance on systems such as heating and gutter repairs and new windows will make students more comfortable. Improvements such as structural upgrades, exit signage, and additional lighting will improve health and life safety for the residents. Installing amenities such as larger computer clusters and card access make students lives more convenient. New kitchenettes, larger bathrooms, and new finishes and furniture will improve the quality of life for the residents. A Resident Fellow apartment is being created to make it possible to have a Resident Fellow living in the building and contributing to student life. The Mark Taper Center, a small building between the two residence halls, is also being renovated to provide a full-service Crothers Administrative Center, which will encompass the Housing Front Desk, offices, and both indoor and outdoor programming space for students.

Blackwelder and Quillen “501” Apartment Conversions
In a fast-tracked project which began in April, 2009 and is scheduled to be completed in September, apartments in all of Blackwelder and on the first two floors of Quillen are being renovated to create new “efficiency” apartments for single graduate students. Each efficiency apartment provides two private bedrooms and a shared kitchen, pantry and bathroom. The kitchens are being enlarged and outfitted with new Energy Star appliances, cabinets, Corian countertops, stainless steel shelves and furnishings. These units are a wonderful new, affordable yet private option for graduate students in EscondidoVillage. The EV High-rise online tour page shows the new floor plan and a photo of the remodeled kitchen.
Escondido Village Slab Heat Renovation – phase 6
The Slab Heat Renovation project has been running in EV for several years now, upgrading the heating systems and energy and water efficiency of the apartments. Forty-eight apartments will be retrofitted and renewed this spring and summer in buildings: EV93, EV95, EV97, EV98, EV99, EV100, EV101, & EV104. The project involves transforming the heating systems from “slab heat” (copper pipes run through the cement slab) to hydronic radiators, installing new, double-paned windows and sliding glass doors, upgraded bathroom and kitchen fixtures, new carpet and flooring, as well as fresh paint. This project runs from April – August, 2009.
Escondido Village Landscaping
Improvements to the many acres of landscaping in Escondido Village, begun in April of 2008, are now nearing completion, and the neighborhoods look fantastic. Crews have been planting new trees, rolling out new lawns, replacing asphalt moonscapes with smooth new walkways, and installing all-new fencing. This work has been completed in the main body of EV, and the project is wrapping up in “Increment 5,” the section of EV between Rains and Mirrielees, and is scheduled to be completed fully this quarter. Details of the project and guidelines for use are provided on the Exterior Landscaping and Storage Policies page. |

Stern Hall Restrooms – phase 2
The project which was begun in Stern last year to completely remodel and upgrade the restrooms will be completed this year with significant upgrades to the restrooms in the remaining buildings: Donner, Serra, and both wings of Larkin.
Wilbur Hall, Arroyo and Cedro Upgrades
A new project is beginning in Wilbur this year. Arroyo and Cedro Halls will be off-line for the summer and will receive port-per-pillow computing, electrical improvements, new fire sprinklers, upgraded fire alarms, remodeled restrooms, new carpet in the student rooms and fresh paint throughout. The rest of the Wilbur buildings will be completed in phases over subsequent summers.
Grove Mayfield Kitchen and First Floor Student Living Space Project
On the Row, Grove Mayfield will be undergoing a full kitchen remodel, including the servery, and the current Residential Education Row offices will be converted into new student rooms.
Lasuen Row Center Conversion
In a very quick turn around after the current residents depart in June, Grove Lasuen will be transformed into the new Lasuen Row Center, which will provide indoor and outdoor programming spaces as well as centralized resources for all Row students, including the Housing Front Desk, Housing Supervisors, Residential Education Row Staff and Academic Advising staff.
Master Plan Implementation
As part of the Housing Master Plan, many spaces across campus will be converted into “premiere” student living choices. In most cases, this will be done primarily by modifying the number of students assigned to a space and the removal of furniture, such as with the conversion of two-room triples to two-room doubles in Branner and Toyon. In a few places, primarily in Lagunita, physical changes to buildings will be made, such as the removal of walls between small spaces. The majority of this work will take place at the end of the summer, but some will occur in windows of opportunity throughout the summer.

Wilbur Hall Upgrades – Phase 2
The project begun in Summer 2009 will continue in Summer 2010 with Junipero and Okada. The houses will receive port-per-pillow computing, electrical improvements, new fire sprinklers, upgraded fire alarms, remodeled restrooms, new carpet in the student rooms and fresh paint throughout. The remaining four Wilbur buildings will be completed in subsequent summers.
Row House Renovations
There are three Row houses remaining on the Capital Improvements project list: Bob, Casa Italiana, and Storey. These houses are scheduled to be fully remodeled, one per year, beginning with Bob, which is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2011. The scope details differs a bit according to the particulars of each house, but the scope categories are the same: Seismic upgrades; life safety upgrades (including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, exit signage and lighting upgrades); ADA improvements; County and code required upgrades; new kitchen; refurbished bathrooms; deferred maintenance work on plumbing, heating and electrical systems; new finishes (carpet, paint, window coverings) throughout; furniture improvements; new signage; new landscaping, hardscape and site furnishings such as bike racks.

Law-School Academic Building
This project involves the construction of a new building for the Law School at the corner of Nathan Abbott Lane and Lane A, on the site of the existing Kresge Auditorium (which will be demolished). This is directly behind Muwekma and Columbae and close to Sigma Nu and Mars. The new building will include faculty offices, Law School clinics, administrative support, seminar rooms and support spaces on three floors. There will be an exterior courtyard on the second floor. The decision was made to limit the new building to three stories with floor elevations corresponding to the existing Crown Hall building. This was done to align the parapet of the new building with the existing Crown Hall, to create a visually unified Law School campus and to increase interaction among the faculty by limiting their distribution to two floors. Construction on this project is scheduled to begin in June, 2009 and be completed by Winter, 2010. The project details can be found here: http://lbre.stanford.edu/dpm/law_school_building.
FOOTNOTE: This web page is updated periodically. Other projects may also be undertaken both in the areas of scheduled projects and in areas that have not yet been designated.
Olmsted Terrace and Olmsted Homes
The University has recently begun two housing projects between Olmsted Road and Stanford Avenue/ El Camino Real. The first project, called Olmsted Terrace, includes the construction of 39 faculty homes along Stanford Avenue, and is being managed by Stanford Real Estate through Regis Homes, a developer. These homes will be offered for sale to Stanford faculty. The second project, known as Olmsted Homes, is constructing 25 staff rental homes (17 single family homes and 4 duplexes) between Olmsted and El Camino, and is being managed through the Stanford Department of Project Management. DAPER (Athletics) will operate the rental homes under a lease with the university for lower level coaches, assistant coaches, and other staff. Information on these two projects is available at a dedicated website: http://olmstedhomes.stanford.edu.
