| Overview of Escondido Village |
| Residence Options for Graduate Students, Couples and Families |
General Description
To receive a summer housing assignment at Stanford University, eligible students should submit an application online through Axess. (See Eligibility for details.) Also, note the assignment process and housing options for the summer term are different from the regular academic year; and the summer housing application is for housing during the summer term only. Students wishing to remain on campus after the summer term must file a separate autumn application. |
| Graduate Housing |
While space in Student with Children housing is limited, we are typically able to meet the Single Graduate and Couples without Children housing demand by the start of Summer Quarter for students with unrestricted residence choices. Special accommodations are offered to students with disabilities and students with a disabled spouse, domestic partner and/or child. |
| Single Graduate Student Housing |
Stanford graduate students continuing their studies for Summer Quarter either:
- Already have summer housing contracts OR
- Must apply for summer housing (based on an academic-year contract)
Already have Summer Housing Contracts
If you reside in one of the following residences below during Spring Quarter, you are under contract for Summer Quarter already and must remain in your residence (if you meet eligibility requirements).
Exception: Students applying to transfer into a different category of housing due to a change in marital or family status may be eligible to change residences.
Residences
- Escondido Village (except those in Studio buildings 1 and 2 with an academic year contract)
- Lyman
- Rains (except those in Buildings 201, 202 and 206)
Students who MUST apply for Summer Housing to remain on campus
Students who reside in one of the following residences below during Spring Quarter must apply for summer housing if they would like to remain on campus during the summer term as their spring contracts are for the academic year only.
Residences
- Munger Graduate Residence
- Schwab
- Escondido Village Studio Buildings 1 and 2
- Rains Buildings 201, 202 and 206
- Co-ops
Students in these residences will change to a different residence for the summer term.

| Couples without Children/Students with Children Housing |
All graduate students are eligible to apply for either Couples without Children or Students with Children Housing as long as they meet the criteria. See Eligibility for details.
1. Couples without Children live in Escondido Village—a neighborhood of approximately 3,200 people.
- Couples without Children Housing is available to students who are married and those who have same-sex or opposite-sex domestic partners who will be occupying the apartment with them at least 50% of each week.
- Couples without children live in one-bedroom high-rise and townhouse apartments (most are in the high-rises).
- There are eight one-bedroom with den apartments available to couples who are both enrolled but these are generally occupied by Stanford students who are in residence from spring and therefore not available in summer.
2. Students with Children live in Escondido Village—a neighborhood of approximately 3,200 people.
- These are one-, two-, and three-bedroom townhouse apartments.
- Most students with children apartments are grouped in neighborhoods made up of other students with children, although some apartments are located in single-student neighborhoods due to the volume of moves each year.
- You must have one or two children in occupancy to be eligible for a two-bedroom apartment, and two or three children for a three-bedroom apartment.
Single parents with one child may request assignment to one-bedroom low-rise apartments. |
| Note: University housing is not provided for extended families, including the parents and siblings of students, or live-in day care staff. |
Furnished or Unfurnished?
Couples without children and students with children may apply for either furnished or unfurnished apartments for the summer term at no additional charge. In furnished apartments, only one set of furniture is provided by the University for each bedroom. If you plan to have two children living in the same bedroom, you should be aware that the bedrooms are very small and cannot comfortably accommodate two children. If you would like to have an additional twin bed provided to you, however, please email the Escondido Village Housing Front Desk after you have been assigned to summer housing. There is one bathroom in each apartment.

| Choose a Contract Length |
There are several contract-length choices listed on the application.
- 10-Week Contract – Only students who are enrolled in a 10-week Stanford class or are enrolled as Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) during the summer term may apply for the 10-week summer contract.
- 8-Week Contract
- 6-week Contract – Only English for Foreign Students program
- “Other” – Only students enrolled in an official Summer Session course with dates outside of the standard 8- and 10-week lengths and do not have an autumn contract are eligible for a special-length contract.

| Matching Summer and Autumn Graduate Housing Assignments |
For students assigned to Single Graduate, Couples without Children or Student with Children Housing in summer and autumn term, your summer assignment will automatically be matched to your autumn assignment provided that you applied for the same category of housing (i.e. single graduate, couple without children or student with children) in both summer and autumn terms and your autumn assignment is available during the summer. This matching will allow you to move into your autumn assignment during summer term rather than moving a second time at the end of summer.
In order for Matching to Occur
You may receive a summer assignment to a residence not listed on your summer application in order for this matching to occur.
- Those who refuse their summer assignment will be charged the appropriate cancellation fees, independent of autumn refusal fees, even if they are assigned to a summer residence that they did not request on their summer housing application.
- However, Housing Assignments cannot match your summer assignment to your autumn assignment if you are assigned to an academic-year-only contract in autumn.
- If you would like to increase your chances of having your summer assignment matched to your autumn assignment, please rank your residence choices on your autumn application appropriately.
- In addition, please note that summer assignments will be matched to the assignment received in the Autumn Lottery, even if a student joins the Autumn Waitlist for reassignment.
- Those students who join the Autumn Waitlist for reassignment may need to move at the end of summer if they are reassigned in the Waitlist round.
- To find the location of a residence, use the searchable campus map. For other details see Tour Graduate Housing or contact the local Housing Front Desk regarding Graduate Housing.
- For more details on the applying for autumn housing, please see the application and assignment sections in Graduate Housing.
Housing Priority for Enrolled Summer Students
Students who are enrolled in summer classes will receive a housing priority in the Summer Lottery.
- Summer enrollment will improve overall chances of receiving housing but will not affect application numbers or increase students’ chances of getting their top residence choice.
- This housing priority will only appear on the application if students enroll in summer classes at least 24 hours prior to submitting their housing application.
- However, Housing Assignments will adjust all housing priorities based on enrollment at the time the Summer Lottery is run.
- DO NOT WAIT to submit your housing application until your housing priority appears on your application.
Different Priorities may split Group
- Students who are applying with a group may be split from their group members if they have different housing or residence priorities.
- Groups whose members have different housing or residence priorities may not petition to be reunited.
- Group members who rank their residence choices differently are also not eligible to petition.

| Groups |
Applying in a Group with Friends (Single students only)
- To apply as a group, all group members must be the same gender and applying for the same category of housing (undergraduate or graduate).
- Each group member must submit a housing application; a group cannot apply through one application.
- Group members are considered for housing as individuals first, but you will receive the same application number to have a better chance receiving the same residence.
- Group members with the same order of residence choices, housing priority, residence priority, and contract length, have a better chance of being assigned together.
- Students who are not assigned to the same residence may petition Housing Assignments to have their group reunited in one residence. NOTE: Keep in mind that you still may not be assigned to the same room/apartment within the residence if your petition is granted. All petitions may not be granted.
- You need to jointly determine a common group name and group password and write them on each application.
Group names and passwords
Each must:
- be between 5 and 8 alphanumeric characters,
- contain at least 1 numeric and 1 alphabetic character and
- not contain special characters. (For example, group name: 4ladies password: in1city)
Group names and passwords are not case sensitive. Every member of the group must list the same group name and password on their applications to join a group.
Steps in applying as a Group
- Select members (of the same gender) to apply in a group with up to three other people (for a total of four people in a group).
- Create a group name and password.
- Synchronize priorities and contract length.
- Apply as individuals as you submit your application, but record same group name and password to join the group.
- Apply on Axess by the Lottery deadline.
- Allow at least 10 seconds in between submitting applications. Do not synchronize and click “submit” at the same time.
Additional Group Information:
- In the Summer Lottery, your group application number will be a random lottery number; in the Waitlist round, it will be based on the date that the last member of the group submitted his/her application.
- You may join a group with Visiting Students or other Stanford students for Summer Housing. Because most continuing graduate students remain in their same room/apartment during the summer term, there are few wholly vacant rooms/apartments to assign to single graduate student groups.
- If the members of a group are applying for different contract lengths, they will be unable to share a room/apartment together.

| Change/Cancel Your Application |
Changing Application Information
You may change or rearrange the order of your residence choices, add and remove group names, or change your contract length at any time until the pertinent application deadline. These changes can be submitted via Axess. Once the pertinent application deadline has passed, you may only change your contract length after assignments are announced and before July 31, and only then by petition through a Summer Contract Change Request form and with a $25 administrative fee. Please consider your contract needs carefully.
Withdrawing an Application
You may withdraw your Summer Housing application without financial penalty by the pertinent application deadline. In order to withdraw an application, students must notify the Housing Assignments office in writing (email, fax or postal mail), as this change cannot be submitted via Axess. For more information on the Summer Lottery and Waitlist assignment process, visit the Assignment Process web page.
Residence Agreement, Terms & Conditions
All students who apply for housing must sign a Residence Agreement, a legal contract that governs the term of occupancy and conduct in University housing (students who respond to assignments in Axess sign electronically).
- One of the most important principles of the Residence Agreement is your obligation to be considerate of other residents and the residence staff and to respect the rights of others at all times.
- Stanford's residence community includes students and staff of different gender, race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. This diversity is highly valued at Stanford and contributes toward the social, cultural, and intellectual life of students.
- Conduct in violation of the rights of others is not tolerated and is grounds for the immediate termination of your occupancy in University housing and/or the withdrawal of future University housing privileges. Such conduct may also result in University disciplinary action under Stanford's Fundamental Standard of student conduct.
- By accepting an assignment, you agree to comply with all University policies in the Residence Agreement.

| Application Instructions |
- Read all of the Summer Apply for Housing information on our website before filling out your application.
- Use the summer application Worksheet for Axess to record your answers to application questions prior to logging into Axess to submit your application. (Choose contract length, residence priorities, group members if applicable, etc.)
- File a Disability/Medical Accommodation Request form for special assignment consideration if you are a student with special housing needs due to a disability or documented medical condition, or you have a spouse, domestic partner or child who is disabled.
- Apply by the Summer Lottery deadline. This guarantees on-campus housing if you rank all residence choices. (Note: Do not list any choices you don’t want. THERE ARE NO REASSIGNMENTS FOR SUMMER QUARTER.)
- Apply in a group with up to three friends, if you like (for single students only). Students must be the same gender and apply as an individual. (See ALL requirements for Groups.)
- Allow plenty of time to submit on Axess. Do not wait until shortly before midnight on the application deadline date to apply. Stanford's computer system may slow down due to heavy usage, possibly causing your application to be entered late.
- Reapply for the Summer Waitlist if you are not offered an assignment during the initial assignment round.
- Attend the daily Walk-in/Continuous Meetings (if you don’t get assigned on the Waitlist round) in the Housing Assignments office. Meetings begin after the Waitlist results are announced and continue through mid-late July.
- Change your residence choices (if you wish) for the Waitlist round and during the walk-in period.
NOTE! Submit a separate housing application for Autumn Quarter if you plan to attend Stanford the next academic year. Single graduate students, students with children, or couples, see Graduate Housing.
