Exploring the GOALIE Resource Fair |
Since its founding, Stanford University’s strong residential program has supported both high-quality graduate scholarship and research. By providing affordable housing near academic resources, the University has cultivated an environment conducive to research and intellectual dialogue among students, their peers, and faculty members.
Today, 4,700 graduate students (more than 57 percent of matriculated single students, couples, and students with children) live on campus, partly because of the active graduate residence program; supportive, friendly environment; and strong sense of community.
If you are a new graduate student enrolled in a Stanford degree program, Stanford guarantees you housing if you apply by the first-round application deadline for Autumn Quarter and are willing to live in any residence for which you are eligible. |
Graduate Residence Program |
| All residences offer social, educational, and cultural events such as: |
| Faculty talks |
| Workshops |
| Film screenings |
| Special classes in subjects such as aerobics, English as a Second Language, and Lamaze childbirth |
| Parties and trips |
A team of professional and student staff members supports programs in each residence or cluster of residences. Residence Deans (RDs) provide counseling and crisis intervention as well as resources to facilitate problem solving. Community Associates (CAs) are fellow Stanford graduate students who help build a sense of community.
CAs organize get-togethers and activities and help residents find services and information on the Stanford campus.
Staff also includes Resident Computer Consultants who manage in-house computer clusters and provide technical support to residents. In the Rains Houses, additional coordinators help plan multicultural programs. |

How Stanford Assigns Housing |
First year housing |
Student Housing uses a computer-based lottery process to make housing assignments.
If you are a new graduate student, Stanford guarantees you housing if you: |
| Enroll (matriculate) in a Stanford degree program |
| Apply by the first-round application deadline for Autumn term |
Indicate that you are willing to live in any residence for which you are eligible |
Students not enrolled in degree programs are eligible for housing after Stanford has assigned all matriculated students to residences. Stanford usually can’t accommodate non-matriculated couples and students with children for Autumn term, when demand for housing is highest. Non-matriculated single students are generally not assigned for Autumn term until after classes begin. |
After your first year |
Stanford gives priority to continuing, matriculated graduate students for a specific number of years based on their academic degree program. If you live in year-round residences, you may renew your room or apartment contracts annually if you remain in continuous occupancy and meet eligibility requirements.
If you live in a residence open just during the academic year, or if you want to change residences, you must reenter the lottery. If you have a year-round contract, you can apply for a mid-year reassignment. Housing Assignments assesses a $200 reassignment fee, and you must be reassigned by the May lottery.
Despite the high demand for on-campus housing, Stanford is able to accommodate about 90 percent of continuing graduate students who desire housing. Additional housing is under construction to meet the increasing demand. |
