| New Student arriving at Stanford |
When housing is available in graduate residences, Stanford Student Housing offers housing to graduate students who are enrolled in a degree program (matriculated students) at least half time, PhD candidates completing their dissertations, undergraduate students attending with their spouse/partner or dependent children, and students who are enrolled at Stanford but not pursuing degrees (non-matriculated students).
This includes: |
| Single Students |
Graduate students attending Stanford without a spouse, partner, or children. |
| Couples without Children |
Graduate or undergraduate students who are married or who have same- or opposite-sex domestic partners who will co-occupy an apartment with them at least 50 percent of each week. At Stanford, a domestic partnership is defined as an established, long-term partnership between two people with an exclusive mutual commitment in which the partners share the necessities of life and ongoing responsibility for their mutual welfare. |
Students with
Children |
Graduate or undergraduate students who have one to three legally-dependent children living with them at least 50 percent of each week, and who are married, in a domestic partnership, or single. Students with shared custody of their children qualify for housing if the children physically occupy the apartment at least 50 percent of each week. If you are expecting a child, you may apply for Student with Children Housing for the quarter that corresponds to the second trimester of pregnancy. New and continuing students with four or more children aren’t eligible for on-campus housing as Stanford doesn’t have adequate housing for large families. |
Stanford does not provide housing for extended families—including a student’s parents or siblings, or live-in day care staff. If your parents or other family members are moving to the Stanford area, you must make alternate housing arrangements for them. See Community housing. |
| Enrollment Requirements |
You must be enrolled for a minimum of eight academic units during each quarter you live on campus. You do not need to be enrolled in courses when you check in, but you must be eligible to enroll and must not have any enrollment holds.
If both you and your spouse/partner are Stanford students, only one student must be enrolled to maintain eligibility for housing. However, in apartments with two-bedrooms and one bedroom and den (for couples without children) both students must be enrolled for the contract period, or approved to be in housing while on leave (by petition to the Housing Assignments office).
Coterminal Students: students who, by the beginning of Autumn Quarter, are (1) coterminal status, (2) will have at least 180 units, and (3) do not have undergraduate guarantee years remaining, may also live in graduate housing. Coterminal students may not change between single graduate and undergraduate housing mid-year. |
| Exceptions |
| Summer Term |
You may live in housing without enrolling for Summer Quarter if you enrolled the previous Spring Quarter. You do not need to file a petition. |
Vacation
Quarter |
If you petition, you may be permitted to live in housing without enrolling for one vacation quarter during autumn, winter, or spring. However, |
- You must be a graduate student on official one-term leave from the University;
- You were enrolled during the previous three consecutive quarters (including summer);
- You must enroll for the quarter following your leave; and
- All other enrolled students must be accommodated.
|
Maternity/ Paternity/
Medical Leave |
If you petition, you may be permitted to live in housing without enrolling for one quarter if you are on maternity/paternity leave or medical leave and enroll for the quarter following your leave. Students requesting medical leave must provide documentation to the Office of Accessible Education. |
| Post-Graduation Quarter |
If you petition, and if we can accommodate all other enrolled students, you may be permitted to live in housing for one quarter without enrolling if you receive your degree following autumn, winter, or spring term. Because of the high demand for housing, we can’t offer post-graduation housing during Autumn Quarter. |
| Occupancy Requirements |
To be eligible for student housing, you, your spouse/partner, and any dependents listed on your housing application must occupy your assigned space at least 50 percent of the time each week. This includes parents with partial or shared child custody who apply for housing for students with children.
|
| Eligibility for Non-matriculated Students |
Post-doctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and other students who are enrolled at Stanford but who are not pursuing degrees are eligible for housing after all matriculated students have been accommodated.
We usually consider non-matriculated students for assignment the first Monday of Autumn Quarter or the first day of walk-in assignments for winter, spring, or summer terms.
Non-matriculated students are not eligible to renew their contracts as Student Housing currently is unable to meet demand for autumn term. |
| Note: |
If your student status changes to non-matriculated after you have been assigned to University housing, you must notify Housing Assignments immediately. If we can accommodate all matriculated students, you may be able to remain in University housing. |
| Misrepresentation of Facts |
The University, with cause, may ask you to provide certifiable documents of facts detailed in your housing application or on your signed Residence Agreement. Any misrepresentation of facts for housing purposes is considered a violation of the Stanford University Residence Agreement and the Fundamental Standard of Student Conduct and may result in the loss of housing privileges and/or possible University disciplinary action. |
