Contract Dates

Stanford offers both academic and year-round rent contracts. Depending on your academic program and residence, you can request move-in dates as early as mid-June or as late as mid-September for Autumn Quarter. Move-in dates for Winter Quarter begin in January and, for Spring Quarter, in April. Early arrival fees apply.

Year-round contracts usually run from September 1 to August 31. If you move into your Stanford residence at the beginning of a term, your first month’s rent will be prorated to the first day of the term. If you are no longer enrolled and move out at the end of a term, your last month’s rent will be prorated to the last day of the term. Rent also is prorated to the end of a summer session for students who do not continue in housing for the following year.

If you have an academic-year contract and want to continue in University housing during the summer, you’ll need to file a new housing application in the spring. See Apply for summer housing.

Contract Rates

On-campus rental rates usually fall below local area rents, and you can rent furnished units at no additional charge. Unlike most off-campus housing, Stanford also includes basic utilities — water, heat, electricity, garbage, and sewer — in the rent. Coinless, cardless laundry is also included in the rent.

Each term, graduate residences assess house dues for educational programs, social activities, and other services that aren’t included in the room rent. A telecommunications fee (approximately $52 per quarter, $78 per semester) covers expenses for land-line phones and network connections.
