post-graduation quarter petition

Commencement

If Stanford confers your degree at the end of winter or spring term, you may be able to remain in University housing for one quarter as long as all enrolled students can be accommodated. (Degree conferral is distinct from the awarding of a diploma, which occurs during Commencement.)

If you want to remain in housing Winter or Spring Quarters without enrolling in courses, file a Post-Graduation Quarter petition. Post-Graduation Quarter petitions are not granted for Autumn Quarter because of the demand of housing during this time.

Eligibility

To remain in University housing as a non-enrolled student you must:

  1. Be an enrolled, matriculated Stanford student during the term preceding your request;
  2. Currently live in a University residence;
  3. Be in good academic and financial standing with the University, and
  4. Have your degree conferred by the first Thursday of the quarter in which you will not be enrolled.

You are not eligible to live in University housing as a non-enrolled student if you simply audit classes or work on an honor’s thesis, honor’s project, dissertation, or outstanding incompletes before your degree can be conferred. If you are engaged in such academic work, but will not be taking classes, you may file a Permit to Attend petition (undergraduates) or Terminal Graduate Registration (graduate students) at the Registrar’s Office at a reduced fee.

Note: If you are working on a dissertation and have been enrolled for three consecutive quarters (including summer), you can submit a Vacation Quarter Petition to live in University housing as a non-enrolled student for one quarter.

Conditions

  1. If your Post-Graduation Quarter petition is approved and you move out before the end of the quarter, you remain liable for the rent for the entire term. A Post-Graduation Quarter grants a housing extension for the entire quarter, not a portion of the quarter. There are no exceptions to this policy!
  2. All terms and conditions of the Residence Agreement apply during your occupancy. Your post-graduation quarter is for one quarter only. You must file a Termination of Occupancy form by the deadline and move off campus at the end of your term of occupancy in a graduation quarter.
  3. Approval of this petition depends on successful completion of your coursework requirements during the current academic quarter and conferral of your degree by the first Thursday of your post-graduation quarter.
  4. If this petition is approved and your degree is not conferred by the first Thursday of your post-graduation quarter, you will be required to register or immediately move off campus.
  5. Eligibility requirements are subject to verification by Housing Assignments. Therefore, if your registration/graduation status changes, please contact Housing Assignments as soon as possible.

If You Graduate At The End Of Autumn Quarter 2009

Submit a Post-Graduation Quarter Petition to Housing Assignments by Friday, October 23, 2009. If your petition is approved, you may stay in housing through Winter Quarter.

You must also file a Termination of Occupancy form by February 5, 2010 if you do not plan to begin a new degree program spring term. This officially notifies your Housing Front Desk and Housing Assignments that you are moving out of housing at the end of Winter Quarter. If you fail to file a termination by February 5, you will be charged a $100 to $400 late fee, depending on the date you file the termination form. Your contract is not automatically terminated at the end of Winter Quarter; you must file the termination by this deadline if you will not be enrolled spring term.

If your petition is denied, you must either move out of University housing at the end of Autumn Quarter (you may file the Termination of Occupancy form at a later date) or, to remain in housing, register as a student for Winter Quarter.

If You Graduate At The End Of Winter Quarter 2010

Submit your Post-Graduation Quarter Petition to Housing Assignments by Friday, February 5, 2010. If your petition is approved, you may stay in housing through Spring Quarter. Unless you have an academic year contract for 2009-10, you must file a Termination of Occupancy form by April 30, 2010. This form officially notifies your Housing Front Desk and Housing Assignments that you are moving out of housing at the end of Spring Quarter. If you fail to file a Termination of Occupancy form by the deadline, you will be charged a $100 to $400 late fee, depending on the date you submit the form. Your contract is not automatically terminated at the end of Spring Quarter; you must file the termination by this deadline if you will not be enrolled summer term. If your petition is denied, you must either move out of University housing at the end of Winter Quarter (in which case, the deadline is extended for the Termination of Occupancy form) or, to remain in housing, register as a student for Winter Quarter.

If You Graduate At The End Of Spring Quarter 2010

You don’t need to file a Post-Graduation Quarter petition to remain in housing for the Summer Quarter. However, you must apply for Summer Housing if you want to remain on campus until August 15, 2010 and you have an academic-year contract in undergraduate housing, Escondido Village, Munger, Rains, or Schwab.
