In 1897, Jane Stanford, co-founder of the University, declared that

"It is desirable that...students should generally reside upon the grounds of the University."

Since that time, Stanford has developed a strong residential character, and University residences have played an important role in the lives and education of generations of Stanford students.

Today, over 10,000 students live in some 80 residences on the Stanford campus. Approximately 93 percent of undergraduates and 52 percent of matriculated graduate students at the home campus live in University housing.

The Stanford residence system is among the largest and most diverse in the nation. Residences vary greatly in their program, size, age, style of architecture, and layout of student rooms. What they hold in common is the goal of providing students with strong, pluralistic communities that support students' academic and personal goals and achievement.

Choosing a residence involves important personal and educational decisions. By reading these Web pages, visiting individual residences, and talking to other students, you can gain a better understanding of the many residence options available to you and can make an informed choice about where you wish to live.
