This page is only for Stanford students who are continuing in their spring residence for summer term with a full-year contract. If you are not residing on campus in the spring term or you are on-campus in the spring with an academic-year contract, please visit the Applying for Summer Housing web pages for information on how to apply for and move into Summer Housing. All students residing in Single Undergraduate Housing have an academic-year contract. All students residing in Couples without Children and Student with Children Housing have a full-year contract. Most Single Graduate Housing residents have a full-year contract but residents of Crothers Hall, Schwab, the co-ops, Rains buildings 201,202 and 206 and many of the residents of Studio buildings 1 and 2 have an academic year contract. If you are currently in Single Graduate Housing and unsure if you have an academic-year or a full-year contract, you can view your contract dates in Axess on the "View All Room Assignments" tab in the Housing & Dining section of Axess. Academic-year contracts terminate on June 16 for non-law students and May 7 for law students. Full-year contracts terminate on August 17.

Students living in Single Graduate, Couples without Children, or Student with Children Housing who graduated in Winter 2007-08 and wish to remain on campus during the summer term must submit a post-graduation quarter petition by May 2.

There is no reassignment round for summer term, except to accommodate changes in marital or family status. Students in a full-year contract may apply for summer housing ONLY if they need a different category of housing. These students should refer to the web pages for Stanford students applying for summer housing for more information on how to apply. Students who change categories of housing for summer term cannot renew their spring assignments for the 2008-09 year. If you receive a new assignment in the Summer Allocation or Waiting List round, your current assignment will terminate as of your move in date to your summer assignment. If you refuse your summer assignment, you will need to contact Housing Assignments to reinstate your spring contract for summer term. While it may not be possible to remain in your spring assignment for summer term if you applied for and cancelled a different summer assignment, remember that you are under contract and will be held to summer rent in your previous category of housing unless you complete a termination of occupancy. (See below for eligibility and deadlines to terminate summer housing.)

Summer Contract Dates and Rates

Students with an autumn assignment. The summer contract begins on June 16 for non-law students and May 7 for law students. Students who renew their contracts for the 2008-09 year and those who apply in the Autumn Graduate Housing lottery and are assigned housing for the 2008-09 year will have continuous on-campus housing through the start of autumn. The summer contracts will end on September 1, 2008, the first day of the autumn contracts. Refer to the chart below for the summer rates.

*The rates shown reflect a contract start date of June 16, 2008 for non-law students and May 7, 2008 for law students. In actuality, summer rent from June 16 (or May 7 for law students) until your summer move in date will be charged at the rate of your spring residence. If your spring residence is more expensive then your summer residence, your summer rent will be higher then the above quoted rates. If your spring residence is less expensive then your summer residence, your summer rent will be lower then the above quoted rates. For law students, this may result in a significant difference from the rate quoted above. You will be able to view your rent due on your University bill in Axess after you are assigned to Summer Housing. If you have questions about your bill in the interim, please contact Housing Assignments.

**Single graduate students assigned to Crothers Memorial will also be charged house dues of $20 for the quarter for services not included in room rent, such as educational programs and social activities.

Graduate Housing Residents Changing Residence for the Autumn Term may incur a room rate adjustment for Summer Quarter depending on their move date. This adjustment to your summer University bill will be made at the time you schedule your move to your new residence. For more information about scheduling your move, please visit the Contract Changes web page. You will have an additional charge for Summer Quarter if you move to a more expensive residence, or receive a credit if you move to a less expensive residence. Please logon to Axess to view any adjustments to your bill. You must pay any increase at the Student Financial Services office within 30 days of the billing change.

Termination of Occupancy

Students residing in Single Graduate, Couples without Children and Students with Children Housing who decide to terminate their contracts at the end of Spring Quarter/Semester or mid-summer must notify Housing Assignments by filing a Termination of Occupancy (TOC).

Students who will not have an Autumn 2008 housing assignment can choose to move out at the end of Spring Quarter/Semester - May 7 for law students, June 17 for non-law students - or on one of two fixed mid-summer contract end dates: July 13 or July 27. They will be charged rent through their selected contract end date plus late TOC fees, if applicable. (Note: Students terminating their contracts for the end of Spring Quarter/Semester who wish to remain in housing through June 16 may file a TOC with June 16 as the move out date. Law students will be charged late departure from May 7 through their move out date; non-law students will be charged late departure rent from June 16 through their move out date.) See chart below for TOC deadline and fees and contact Housing Assignments with any questions.

TOC Deadline for Single Graduate, Couples without Children and Students with Children residents who will not be in on-campus housing in Autumn 2008
TOC deadline
Fees
by May 2 rent through selected contract end date (end of spring term, July 13 or July 27) plus late departure, if applicable
May 3 - June 13*
$100 late TOC fee plus rent through selected contract end date (end of spring term, July 13 or July 27) and late departure, if applicable
June 14 - June 16 $200 late TOC fee plus rent through selected contract end date (end of spring term, July 13 or July 27) and late departure, if applicable
after June 16 will not be released from summer contract; charged full rent until move out date plus rent at the "contract breaker" rate through August 17
*Students who apply for Autumn Quarter/Semester 2008 housing and are not assigned have until May 30 to file a TOC without incurring a late TOC fee.

Students who do have an Autumn 2008-09 housing assignment but did not renew in the Autumn Lottery will not be released from their obligation to pay rent for Summer Quarter unless they move out on or before June 16. This applies to students who are moving to a different category of housing or residence for Autumn Quarter as well as to students who are assigned to the same residence for summer and autumn. Students may file a TOC to move out at the end of spring term and should follow the TOC deadlines in the chart above but may not select a mid-summer contract end date. Students who do move out mid-summer may file a TOC at any time and specify their departure date. However, they will be obligated to pay full rent until the day they move out and return their keys plus rent at the "contract breaker" rate for the remainder of the Summer Quarter. The "contract breaker" rate is the lowest rate for the category and type of housing to which the student is assigned. If no vacancies remain in that category and type of housing by the end of the assignment period, July 25, the student will be released from the Summer Quarter contract with a $200 administrative fee. Please be aware that we are not able to release students from contract during Summer Quarter given the number of vacancies we have in each category of housing. If you file a TOC to end your contract before the end of the quarter, you should expect to pay the "contract breaker" rent for the remainder of the Summer Quarter. Students who cancel their Autumn Quarter housing should follow the TOC procedures for students without an Autumn assignment.

Students who renewed their contract for Autumn 2008-09 will not be released from their obligation to pay rent for Summer Quarter. These students may file a TOC at any time and specify their departure date. However, they will remain liable for full rent through the remainder of the Summer Quarter. Students in this situation may choose to sublet their space for summer instead of terminating. Students who cancel their autumn assignment will be responsible for full rent through their move out date or spring contract end date, which is later, plus rent at the "contract breaker" rate through August 17. If no vacancies remain in their category and type of housing by the end of the assignment period, July 25, the student will be released from the Summer Quarter contract with a $200 administrative fee. Please be aware that we are not able to release students from contract during Summer Quarter given the number of vacancies we have in each category of housing. If you cancel your autumn renewal and file a TOC to end your contract before the end of the summer quarter, you should expect to pay rent though your move out date or spring term end date, whichever is later, plus rent at the "contract breaker" rate for the remainder of the Summer Quarter.

Any exceptions are made at the discretion of the director of Housing Assignments and would result in a $200 contract release fee plus rent for the days in residence.

Rescinding a Termination of Occupancy Request. If you would like to rescind a TOC request, contact Housing Assignments as soon as possible. Housing Assignments can only approve requests that will not impact incoming students to your residence. Please note that if your request is approved, you may have to move to a different apartment or room to accommodate incoming students. Please make sure to include your Stanford ID number in all email correspondence with Housing Assignments so your request can be processed efficiently.

Changing your requested move out date. If you would like to select an alternate fixed move out date, contact Housing Assignments as soon as possible. If you are eligible for this change, you will be charged the late TOC fee, if applicable, that corresponds to the date you are making this request. (See the fee schedule above.) Housing Assignments can only approve requests that will not impact incoming students to your residence. Please note that if you are requesting an extension to your contract, you may have to move to a different apartment or room to accommodate incoming students. Please make sure to include your Stanford ID number in all email correspondence with Housing Assignments so your request can be processed efficiently.

Subletting

Students are able to sublet their room or apartment during the summer term to current Stanford affiliates. (Stanford undergraduate students are not eligible to sublet apartments in Graduate Housing.) Students are not permitted to charge more for their apartment than the rental rate they pay and must file a sublease agreement at their Housing Service Center . Single students who live in shared occupancy apartments must have their roommate sign the subletting agreement to acknowledge that they have been informed of the sublet. Stanford offers a a subletting database to facilitate the formation of summer sublets. This database as well as more information regarding the subletting policy is available at http://sublease.stanford.edu .

Post-Graduation Quarter Petitions

All students graduating in Spring 2007-08 may remain in housing during the summer term through August 17, 2008, as long as you are in good standing with the University. If you would prefer to move out at the end of spring or mid-summer, you must complete a TOC. (See above for deadlines and details.)

All students residing in Single Graduate, Couples without Children and Student with Children Housing who graduated in Winter 2007-08 and were approved for a post-graduation quarter of housing in spring must complete a second post-graduation quarter petition for summer term by May 4 if they want to remain in their apartments through summer. Those who would like to move out at the end of Spring Quarter must instead complete a TOC by May 4. Those who want to move out on one of the mid-summer contract end dates (July 15 or July 29) must complete both a post-graduation quarter petition and a TOC by May 4.
