Living on campus has many advantages. Rents tend to be lower than off campus, laundry and utilities are included in the rent, telephone and internet service is inexpensive, and you can walk to classes or work. However, please note that all of the single student housing on campus is furnished.
Now is the perfect time to consider moving on campus! Single matriculated students with housing assignment priority years remaining can renew their on campus housing contracts for the following academic year.
Graduate students are eligible to renew their contract if:
1) assigned to a full-year contract on campus by May 7 (academic year contracts are NOT eligible for renewal),
2) have additional housing assignment priority years remaining, and
3) submit an application in Axess by May 7, 2009.
Moving On Campus Beginning Spring Quarter
To try for a reassignment to on-campus housing, you will need to file a Reassignment Request Form at the Housing Assignments office. If you plan to get an on-campus assignment and then renew for the 2009-10 academic year, please remember that academic year contracts are NOT eligible for renewal; you must select only residences that are open to students year-round. If we are able to reassign you to one of the residences you list on the reassignment application, you will be released from your off-campus apartment contract without penalty; the $200 reassignment fee does not apply to students transferring from the off-campus apartment program.
STUDENTS WHO WILL NOT HAVE HOUSING ASSIGNMENT PRIORITY YEARS FOR 2009-10: Even if you will not have any remaining housing priority years for 2009-10, you may try for an on-campus reassignment for spring quarter. However, you will have to move off campus at the end of your 2008-09 contract.
Moving On Campus Beginning Summer or Autumn
If you have housing assignment priority years remaining after this year but don't wish to or cannot move on campus until after spring term, the following option is an excellent choice.
Applying for Summer and Autumn Housing: If you apply concurrently for the Summer Housing Allocation and the Graduate Housing Lottery and meet the application deadline of May 7th, you will be given a special priority in the Lottery.
If you have at least one remaining housing priority year, are willing to commit to living on campus for the summer of 2009, and will accept any autumn assignment for which you are eligible (although you can of course still rank your preferences), we will guarantee that you will have an autumn assignment by the end of the summer.
If you have at least one remaining housing priority year, are willing to commit to living on campus for the summer of 2009 and are applying for autumn housing with limited choices , you will be given a special priority for the lottery, but you will not be guaranteed an autumn assignment.
In considering these options, remember that if you are assigned to a residence that does not appeal to you, you may accept the assignment and apply for reassignment. If you are reassigned in July through the Autumn waiting list round, there will be no reassignment fee. If you apply for and receive a reassignment during the 2009-10 academic year, there will be a reassignment fee.
The following information about the requirements for the guarantee are very important:
- You must apply for the Summer Housing Allocation and the Graduate Housing Lottery by the May 7th deadline.
- For the summer application, the main requirement is that you commit to living on campus for the summer of 2009. As there will be many spaces available, you should be able to list 3 or more choices to receive a summer assignment. List full-year residences as your top choices if you do not wish to move between summer and autumn.
- If you are assigned for autumn to a full-year residence (as opposed to an academic-year-only residence) Housing Assignments will do their best to match your summer and autumn residences so that you will not have to move twice. List full-year options as your top choices on your lottery application if you do not wish to move between summer and autumn..
- It is possible that you could be assigned to one residence for summer and another for autumn, which would neccesitate another move.
- If you refuse your summer assignment or are not offered a summer assignment due to limited choices on your summer application and receive an autumn assignment as a result of the priority you received for taking a summer assignment, your autumn assignment may be cancelled.
Applying for Autumn Housing Only: If you cannot move on campus until later in the summer, you can apply for on-campus housing through the Graduate Housing Lottery. You will not receive the special priority that will be given to students who commit to living on campus for the summer of 2009. If you will be at Stanford over the summer and wish to stay in University housing for the entire time, you must request the August 28th move-in date, as your latest possible move-out date from your current apartment is August 31.
Submitting a Termination Form for Your Current Apartment:
If you plan to go through the Graduate Housing Lottery and/or the Summer Housing Allocation, you will need to file a Termination of Occupancy form by May 8, even though you will not yet know the results of the Lottery and/or Summer Allocation. You should base your requested move-out date on the date you anticipate moving into on-campus housing. Once you learn whether or not you were assigned, you can request a change to your move-out date. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate move-out date change requests.
