Suggested Cleaning Guidelines for Vacating Residents

These general guidelines have been compiled for your use from specific cleaning guides from the different off-campus apartment complexes. Please be aware that each complex has their own cleaning requirements for vacating residents.

Kitchen:

  • Replace appliance bulbs if burned out, including refrigerator and oven.
  • Remove grease from under drip pans and clean or replace drip pans.
  • Clean oven or wipe oven clean after self-cleaning; do not use oven cleaner in self-cleaning ovens.
  • Clean refrigerator inside and out, including vegetable drawers. Do not forget to clean the top of the fridge!
  • Defrost freezer if needed and wipe dry.
  • Clean dishwasher exterior and inside door. You may want to run one cycle without soap and then wipe all surfaces thoroughly.
  • Clean sink and faucet.
  • Clean kitchen cabinets and drawers, including cabinet doors and drawer facings.
  • Clean counters and floor.

Bedrooms and Hallways:

  • Clean shelves and clean out any cobwebs.

Bathrooms:

  • Clean medicine cabinets and all mirrors. Clean cabinets under sink. Clean sinks, faucets, remove hardwater deposits from all brightwork.
  • Clean counters.
  • Clean toilets, seats and base.
  • Clean shower doors, shower door tracks and frame, faucet handles and spout.
  • Use a good tile cleaner to remove soap scum and algae.

Where applicable:

  • Sweep or hose down patio or deck.
  • Clean all windows, window sills, tracks and screens.
  • Clean all window blinds and vertical louvers.
  • Replace burned out bulbs.
  • Clean light fixtures, dusting or using a damp cloth.
  • Clean fingerprints and smudges from doorframes, around doorknobs, and around light switches.
  • Remove all cobwebs from ceilings and walls.
  • Wipe all walls, doors and door frames, including window ledges in all rooms.
  • Remove hooks, nails, and other adhesive material used to put up pictures or other objects on walls and doors (use caution to keep wall damage to a minimum).
  • Vacuum carpets.
  • Remove all trash
