New This Year
On this page, you will read about policy changes as well as upcoming construction and renovation projects that affect the application process for 2013-14.
Subsidized Off-campus Housing
Stanford has secured off-campus leases at the following apartment complexes in Menlo Park, Mountain View and Palo Alto to help meet the demand for housing this year. These subsidized off-campus apartments will be offered along with the on-campus options in the waiting list and continuous assignment rounds of housing assignments. You may add them to your list of preferences in Axess after the first round Lottery. These units will be furnished and your subsidized housing charges will include Internet and utilities. These apartments are available through the Summer Quarter 2014. These apartments were leased to help meet the demand from guaranteed first-year students so you cannot renew the apartment for next year. A chart of information about the complexes and detailed descriptions, prices and pictures of the individual complexes are available under the Housing Options section of this website [1].
Escondido Village Radiant Heat Renovation for 2013-14
For several years now, Student Housing has been progressively replacing the radiant heating (slab heating) systems in the Escondido Village low-rise buildings with new hydronic heating systems. Residents of buildings 1, 15, 28, 29, 35, 39, 40, 42, and 50 will need to move during the 2013-14 year in order for the next phase of renovation to proceed. Students are guaranteed alternate housing when the project reaches their building.
To complete the renovations, it is necessary for us to move students into other housing while their buildings are being renovated. Renovations will begin on building 39 in late December. Building 40 will be renovated during Winter Quarter and buildings 42 and 50 during Spring Quarter, one at a time. Buildings 35, 29, 28, 15, and 1 will be renovated during the summer, two or three at a time. Residents will move progressively as the renovations are completed.
Escondido Village Radiant Heat Renovation for 2012-13
For several years now, Student Housing has been progressively replacing the radiant heating (slab heating) systems in the Escondido Village low-rise buildings with new hydronic heating systems. Residents of buildings 16, 18, 20, 22, 25, 26, 30, 34, 36, and 38 will need to move during the 2012-13 year in order for the next phase of renovation to proceed. Students are guaranteed alternate housing when the project reaches their building.
To complete the renovations, it is necessary for us to move students into other housing while their buildings are being renovated. Renovations started on building 16 in late December. Building 18 were renovated during Winter Quarter and buildings 20 and 22 during Spring Quarter, one at a time. Buildings 25, 26, 30, 34, 36, and 38 will be renovated during the summer, two at a time. Residents will move progressively as the renovations are completed.
Hulme Renovation Project
We are planning a renovation project for Hulme that will take place during spring and summer 2014. This project will improve the kitchens, install a new fire sprinkler system, and replace the water heating boiler and roof.
To complete these renovations, it will be necessary for us to move students who are living on the first and second floors of Hulme into different housing assignments at the end of the Winter Quarter 2014 (during spring break). After we renovate the first and second floors, the students living on the third and fourth floors will move permanently into the renovated apartments. We will continue to move the next two floors down into the renovated apartments until we work our way up through the eighth floor. We will start with the first floor the beginning of Spring Quarter 2014 and finish the eighth floor by the end of August 2014. Student Housing will provide you with boxes and moving assistance when your floor is scheduled to be renovated. Each set of two floors will take about five weeks to renovate.
At the end of Winter Quarter 2014, the residents of the first and second floors of Hulme will be offered priority for reassignment to any of the vacancies that are available in graduate housing for Spring Quarter 2014. We will send out more detailed information to those students after the start of the 2013-14 year.
McFarland House Renovation Project
There is an important renovation project for McFarland House taking place during spring and summer 2013. The intent of this project is to improve the design of the McFarland apartments to permanently transform them into more equitable and appropriately arranged spaces for two single students (a two-bedroom efficiency apartment). These renovations will result in units similar to the apartments that were recently renovated in Quillen and Blackwelder Houses. In addition, we will be renovating the common spaces on the first floor and basement to provide renewed and focused community/social gathering space.
The current livingroom area in each apartment will be enclosed to create a second private bedroom with an additional built-in closet. Locks will be installed in each of the bedroom doors. Significant improvements are also planned for the kitchen. The kitchens will be completely rearranged into a more open, L-shaped configuration, complete with new lower cabinets, countertops, upper shelving, accessories, lighting, and small eating area. In addition, a new fire sprinkler system will be installed throughout the building, as well as a new roof and boiler.
To complete these renovations, it is necessary for us to move students who are living on the first and second floors of McFarland into different housing assignments at the end of the Winter Quarter 2013. After we renovate the first and second floors, the students living on the third and fourth floors will move permanently into the renovated apartments. We will continue to move the next two floors down into the renovated apartments until we work our way up through the eighth floor. We will start with the first floor the beginning of Spring Quarter 2013 and finish the eighth floor by the end of August 2013. Student Housing will provide you with boxes and moving assistance when your floor is scheduled to be renovated. Each set of two floors will take about four weeks to renovate.

When McFarland is converted to two-bedroom efficiency apartments, the couples living in McFarland may remain in the newly renovated apartment for the remainder of their current contract period, but may opt to move to a different building that offers the traditional one-bedroom apartment for couples during the summer. Couples will be able to renew on Axess for 2013-14 if they are otherwise eligible whether or not they move out of the building to a traditional one-bedroom mid-rise apartment.

Students assigned to the one-bedroom, double occupancy apartments in McFarland will continue to pay the one-bedroom double occupancy rate throughout the 2012-13 year, even after their apartment has been renovated. The monthly charges will increase to the two-bedroom efficiency rate on September 1, 2013. Single students will be able to renew for 2013-14 if they are otherwise eligible, but should select the two-bedroom efficiency apartment if they want to renew.
Escondido Village One-bedroom, Double Occupancy Apartments
After the renovation project to create more two-bedroom efficiency apartments we will be reducing the number of one-bedroom, double occupancy apartments available. Current residents of Escondido Village one-bedroom, double occupancy apartments outside of McFarland will be able to renew their contract to stay in their current apartment or in an efficiency apartment if they want to move to an apartment in Blackwelder, Quillen or McFarland over the summer. Both options will be available on the renewal application on Axess.
Escondido Village Two-bedroom, Triple Occupancy Apartments
Current residents of the Escondido Village two-bedroom, triple occupancy apartments will be able to renew their contract to stay in their current apartment or in an efficiency apartment if they want to move to an apartment in Blackwelder, Quillen or McFarland over the summer. Both options will be available on the renewal application on Axess.
New Graduate Housing Construction (Comstock Circle 5, 6, and 8-14)
It is a long-term goal of the University to build additional housing for graduate students. A much needed and anticipated project is breaking ground on Comstock Circle in Escondido Village during Spring Quarter of 2013. The residents of Escondido Village low-rise buildings 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 were relocated during Spring Break 2013 to make room for this project. Four buildings will be built: one premium studio building for couples, two junior studio buildings for single students, and two buildings of 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartments for single students. Major construction will begin Spring of 2013. Project website: http:\\comstockhousing.stanford.edu [2]
