Mirrielees is an apartment residence for upperclass students. It was built in 1972, originally as part of the nearby Escondido Village graduate community. Each furnished apartment has a small living-dining area, a kitchen, and bathroom. Mirrielees houses approximately 290 students with one person per bedroom – two-bedroom apartments house two people and three-bedroom apartments house three people. Mirrielees is one of the housing options in the Gender-neutral housing program.
Mirrielees is an enjoyable community, and as apartment living offers independence and privacy, it is best suited for students who wish to make their primary social group small. With an involved residence staff—Resident Assistants, a peer health educator, and two RCCs—there is plenty of support. Wide social activities are offered as well.
Edith Ronald Mirrielees (1879-1962) is the namesake for Mirrielees House. A member of the class of 1906, Edith earned her bachelor’s degree at Stanford in January 1907. As a student she was editor of the literary magazine Sequoia, an associate editor of the Stanford Quad yearbook, and co-founder of the women’s honorary society, Cap and Gown. She joined the English Department in 1909 as an instructor in writing, rose through the ranks to full professor, and retired in 1944. In addition to teaching she was a prolific writer and in 1959 published Stanford: The Story of a University. Professor Mirrielees instructed, mentored, and became friends with John Steinbeck, and he wrote the introduction to the final edition of her classic book on writing.
