Assignments are made in "rounds" beginning with an exemption round for students with special housing consideration due to a documented medical condition and for students whose spouse, domestic partner, or child is disabled. See Students with Disabilities.
Before each quarter, Housing Assignments holds an automated Waiting List assignment round. For Autumn Quarter, the May Lottery determines the initial housing assignments and the July Waiting list round determines the second round of assignments. For Summer Quarter, the Summer Lottery and Summer Waiting List take place the preceding May and are only a week apart.
Who can participate?
All matriculated students who apply for the Waiting List must be eligible to live in Student Housing. For Summer Quarter, enrolled non-matriculated students may apply for housing if eligible.
Students Seeking Housing for Autumn Quarter
You weren’t offered an assignment in the Lottery and want to try again. Please note that you must log into Axess after the after the initial Lottery to join the Waiting List round in order to maintain your guarantee and/or position for housing. You may also modify your housing choices at that time.
You missed the first-round Lottery housing application deadline.
You were assigned in the May Lottery but not to one of the residences you wanted, and you want to be reassigned on the autumn Waiting List.
You were assigned in the Lottery but need to apply for a different category of housing because of a change in your marital or family status.
Students Seeking Housing for Winter or Spring Quarter
If you apply by the first-round deadline in May for housing beginning Winter or Spring Quarter, you are put on the Waiting List for that quarter with their first-round application number.
If you missed the first-round Lottery housing application deadline, but apply by the Waiting List deadline, you will go on the winter or spring Waiting List with a sequential application number based on the date the application was submitted.
You are assigned housing but need to apply for a different category of housing because of a change in your marital or family status.
Students Seeking Housing for Summer Quarter
NOTE: If you remain unassigned after the Waiting List round, you should participate in the Continuous Assignments round for that quarter. If you are still unassigned at the end of the Continuous Assignments period, you must rejoin the Waiting List for the next quarter by the published deadline if you still wish to be considered for assignment.
Waiting List Process
The number of students on the Waiting List who are assigned a space is based on the number of housing spaces available. Spaces become available throughout the year when students cancel their housing assignments (graduate, take a leave, change categories of housing etc.).
Priority is given to students who already have a contract on campus, but are applying for a different category of housing. First-year graduate students will also continue to have a high priority. Within each priority level, students are considered for housing in application number order. During the Summer Waiting List, enrolled students have priority over un-enrolled students.
Your Application Number
The first housing assignment round for any academic year is called the Lottery. The Lottery takes place in the May proceeding the academic year. Students who need housing should apply for housing by the Lottery deadline in order to receive a first-round application number. First-round Lottery numbers are the lowest (or best) application numbers. Students who are unassigned during the Lottery will keep their first-round Lottery number if they apply by the Waiting list deadline for the quarter they need housing.
Students joining the Waiting List after the Lottery deadline receive a sequential application number above all the students with numbers in the first-round based on the date they submitted their application.
If you join the Waiting List for a given quarter and are not assigned for that quarter, you retain your application number if you join the Continuous Assignments round for that quarter. Likewise, if you are unassigned in the Continuous Assignments round you will retain your application number if you apply by the Waiting List deadline for the next quarter.
Application numbers are assigned at the end of the application period after all applications have been submitted; therefore, they are not available until assignments are announced.
If you refuse a housing assignment and then join a Waiting List, you lose your application number and are placed at the bottom of the Waiting List with a sequential application number based on the date you joined the Waiting List round.
NOTE:
It is your responsibility to check Axess to see if you have been assigned.
