Options for Students with Children

On-campus Housing

Student Housing is available in townhouse-style apartments with one, two, or three bedrooms (eligibility based on family size).

Graduate or undergraduate students who have one to three legally-dependent children living with them at least 50 percent of each week are eligible to live in Student with Children Housing. Students with children may or may not be married or in a domestic partnership. Students with shared custody of their children qualify for this type of housing if the children physically occupy the apartment at least 50% of each week. If you are expecting a child, you may apply for Student with Children Housing for the quarter that corresponds to the second trimester of pregnancy.

Stanford does not have adequate housing for large families with four or more children. Three-bedroom apartments can only accommodate three twin beds, so in general students with more than three children are not eligible for on-campus housing. If you have four children and one of them is an infant or you do not need more than three twin beds, then you may petition to live on campus by submitting a request at http://helpsu.stanford.edu.

Stanford does not provide housing for extended families—including students’ parents, siblings, or live-in day care staff. If your parents or other family members are moving to the Stanford area, you must make alternate housing arrangements for them. See Community Housing.

Off-Campus Housing

Rental housing is available near Stanford, but the University is located in a highly desirable suburban area in the heart of Silicon Valley. Consequently, off-campus rental rates are relatively high compared to many other regions of the United States and even other parts of the Bay Area.

If you decide to live off campus, plan to arrive at Stanford at least two weeks early to take advantage of a wider range of housing choices.

You can check local rental listings, accessible only to Stanford students and affiliates, at Student Housing’s Community Housing website. You will be directed from there to the rental listings, which are available through the Places4Students web site. You will either need a Stanford email address to view the rental listings, or may contact Housing Assignments for a temporary password.
