New This Year

On this page, you will read about policy changes as well as upcoming construction and renovation projects that affect the application process for 2012-13.

Additional Housing Options. Student Housing is also working on developing additional housing options both on and off campus to help meet the increased demand for the coming year.

  • Escondido Village two-bedroom, triple occupancy apartments - $655/month – We are creating an extra bedroom in a number of two-bedroom apartments by converting the living room into an additional bedroom. This option has been offered at a reduced rate because the living room does not have a door and will not be as private as having your own bedroom.

  • Escondido South four-bedroom quadruple occupancy apartments - $655/month – There are a small number of spaces in four-bedroom, one bath apartments available. This option is also listed at a reduced rate because while you have will have your own bedroom, you will share the common space (living room, kitchen and bathroom) with three other students.

  • Oak Creek two-bedroom, double occupancy apartments (autumn only)- $972/month – We are offering some short term two-bedroom apartments for autumn-only at a luxury complex neighboring campus. Students assigned to this option will have priority to move on campus for the Winter Quarter as spaces become available. If you were still guaranteed housing when you were assigned for autumn then you will also be guaranteed for winter. These apartments have been rented to address the demand from undergraduates returning from abroad Winter Quarter. Depending on the undergraduate demand, some very limited number of students may be able to stay for the full year. You will not be able to renew this option for the following year.

  • Oak Creek two-bedroom, double occupancy apartments (one-year only) - $972/month –Depending on the undergraduate demand, some very limited number of students may be able to stay at Oak Creek for the full year. You will not be able to renew this option for the following year.

  • Other subsidized off-campus apartments - We are exploring additional apartments off-campus to help meet the demand from first year students. More information on these potential spaces will be available during the continuous assignment period in August and September.

New Contract Dates for Students with Children
The Palo Alto School District has moved their academic calendar up a week starting in 2011-12. As a result we are adjusting the contract start and end dates for students with children for the 2012-13 year. Students who are moving to campus with school aged children may select to arrive on August 14, 2012 on their housing application. All Student with Children contracts will end on August 5, 2013 rather than at the end of the full eight-week summer contract in order to accommodate the families arriving the following year. Students who are continuing in housing for the following year will have their contracts extended to September 1 to match their 2013-14 contract start date.

Returning Resident Priority
We are removing the returning resident priority from the general first-round Lottery. This priority has been replaced with the renewal options for students who are continuing in graduate housing. Law students with priority to Munger will continue to receive a returning resident priority if they list their current residence on their application.

Off-campus Subsidized Housing
Depending on the demand for Single Graduate Housing in the first-round Lottery, Student Housing may offer some autumn only off-campus subsidized apartments to help meet the new student guarantee. If needed, these short-term spaces will be offered in the second-round Waiting List as part of the regular assignment round. More details about this subsidized housing will be available in late May.

Escondido Village One-bedroom, Double Occupancy Apartments
Current residents of the Escondido Village one-bedroom, double occupancy apartments in the mid-rise apartments will be able to renew their contract in the same apartment to stay in their current apartment or in an efficiency apartment if they want to move to a high-rise apartment in Blackwelder or Quillen over the summer. Both options will be available on the renewal application on Axess.

Graduate Housing Package Center
While mail and packages are generally sent directly to the apartments in graduate housing, some students may wish to have their packages sent to a centralized location. With this in mind, Graduate Housing is now offering a new service, a Graduate Housing Package Center. This package center, located in Escondido Village next to the front desk, will accept packages for graduate housing residents who “register” for this service.

Once a resident is registered, they will be given a special mailing address and mail code to use for receiving packages. These packages will be accepted by a Student Housing employee from all couriers and held, securely, until picked up. The package center is open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. An email will be sent to the recipient of the package when received at the Graduate Housing Package Center.

To begin the process of registering for this new service, please click on the web link below, complete the registration form, print and sign it, and then drop it off at your front desk. You will soon receive a confirming email from the package center staff stating that you are “registered” for this service as well as acknowledging your personalized mailing address and mail code!

Escondido Village Radiant Heat Renovation
For several years now, Student Housing has been progressively replacing the radiant heating (slab heating) systems in the Escondido Village low-rise buildings with new hydronic heating systems. Residents of buildings 16, 18, 20, 22, 25, 26, 30, 34, 36, and 38 will need to move during the 2012-13 year in order for the next phase of renovation to proceed. Students are guaranteed alternate housing when the project reaches their building. Demand for graduate housing is at its peak in autumn, so all of these buildings will be occupied for that quarter. To complete these renovations, it is necessary for us to move students who are living in the first few buildings into different housing assignments during the winter and spring terms of 2013. After we renovate those buildings, the students living in the next building will move permanently into the renovated apartments. Then we will renovate their apartments. We will continue to move the next building over into the recently renovated apartments until we work our way up through the buildings scheduled for this year.

  • Escondido Village buildings 16, 18 and 20, three of the buildings slated for the slab-heat retrofit this year, will be used to meet the demand for undergraduate housing in winter and spring, and will then be renovated during summer. Current residents of 16, 18 and 20 will move out at the end of Autumn Quarter to another location in graduate housing.

  • Escondido Village buildings 22 and 26 will start construction consecutively during Spring Quarter. Current residents of 22 will be moved during spring break to other vacancies in graduate housing. Residents of 26 will be moved into building 22 after it is renovated.

  • Additional Escondido Village buildings 25, 30, 34, 36, and 38 will be renovated during the summer term and residents will move progressively as the renovations are completed.

McFarland House Renovation Project
We are planning an important renovation project for McFarland House that will take place during spring and summer 2013. The intent of this project is to improve the design of the McFarland apartments to permanently transform them into more equitable and appropriately arranged spaces for two single students (a two-bedroom efficiency apartment). These renovations will result in units similar to the apartments that were renovated in Quillen and Blackwelder Houses. In addition, we will be renovating the common spaces on the first floor and basement to provide renewed and focused community/social gathering space.

The current living room area will be enclosed to create a second private bedroom with an additional built-in closet. Locks will be installed in each of the bedroom doors. Significant improvements are also planned for the kitchen. The kitchens will be completely rearranged into a more open, L-shaped configuration, complete with new lower cabinets, countertops, upper shelving, accessories, lighting, and small eating area. In addition, a new fire sprinkler system will be installed throughout the building, as well as a new roof.

To complete these renovations, it is necessary for us to move students who are living on the first and second floors of McFarland into different housing assignments at the end of the Winter Quarter 2013. After we renovate the first and second floors, the students living on the third and fourth floors will move permanently into the renovated apartments. We will continue to move the next two floors down into the renovated apartments until we work our way up through the eighth floor. We will start with the first floor the beginning of Spring Quarter 2013 and finish the eighth floor by the end of August. Student Housing will provide you with boxes and moving assistance when your floor is scheduled to be renovated. Each set of two floors will take about four weeks to renovate.

  • When McFarland is converted to two-bedroom efficiency apartments, the couples living in McFarland may remain in the newly renovated apartment for the remainder of their current contract period, but will need to move to a different building that offers the traditional one-bedroom apartment for couples during the following summer.

  • At the end of Winter Quarter 2013, the residents of the first and second floors will be offered priority for reassignment to any of the vacancies that are available in graduate housing for Spring Quarter 2013. We will send out more detailed information to those students after the start of the 2012-13 year.

  • Students assigned to the one-bedroom, double occupancy apartments in McFarland will continue to pay the one-bedroom double occupancy rate throughout the 2012-13 year, even after their apartment has been renovated. The monthly charges will increase to the two-bedroom efficiency rate on September 1, 2013.

Potential New Graduate Housing Construction (Comstock Circle 5, 6, and 8-14)
It is a long-term goal of the University to build additional housing for graduate students. One potential site for new construction is located in Escondido Village within Comstock Circle. While plans are only preliminary that this point, the residents of Escondido Village low-rise buildings 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 should be aware that if we receive approval and funding for new graduate housing, they will likely need to relocate before the construction begins Spring 2013.

Potential Blackwelder Court Parking Structure
Construction of a new underground parking structure at Blackwelder Court is preliminarily scheduled to begin in January 2013 and is scheduled to open in autumn of 2014. This project will increase the parking in Escondido Village to accommodate future graduate housing construction within Escondido Village. During this construction project, no parking at Blackwelder Court will be available.
