William Webster grew up in Palo Alto. He is a graduate of Stanford University, where he earned a B.A. in music and a Ph.D. in German studies. William has worked in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics since 1992, where he is currently an Administrative Associate.
William was raised by parents who instilled in him a passion for justice. Since 1989, he has been a passionate volunteer in the East Palo Alto community. He has attended over 90% of that city’s council meetings, although he is not a member of the council. His volunteerism has focused primarily upon housing issues. Specifically, he is an outspoken advocate for affordable housing and is one of the co-founders of EPA CAN DO, a nonprofit organization that promotes housing for low-income residents. William is a member of the East Palo Alto Rent Stabilization Board, which oversees rents and evictions. He actively participates in political campaigns by going door-to-door, and by recruiting individuals to serve in public office. In Williams’s words, "My personal life is my public life." He is an icon in East Palo Alto and an example of volunteerism at its best.
