Institutional Research & Decision Support

Analytical Reports

Each year, IR&DS produces ongoing reports that are distributed to University executives, such as Deans, Administrative Deans, and the Provost, for their use in managing their organizations.  These reports are an important part of Institutional Research at Stanford and will continue to be refined each year based on suggestions from users and availability of new data.  They also change from year-to-year as Stanford’s new information systems change the way data is gathered and stored.

Currently, these reports are:

In addition, IR&DS coordinates Stanford’s response to the Department of Education’s yearly statistical surveys, IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System  http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/).  This data includes faculty, staff, and student counts plus financial aid, graduation rates, degrees granted, and financial statement information.  IPEDS has a Peer Analysis System, which is a good source for general comparative data, as all educational institutions are required to submit data to IPEDS, and the data is available via the PAS.  Contact IR&DS if you wish to make use of IPEDS data.

This Research Definitions document contains research definitions as used at Stanford and is intended as a reference for anyone who uses research terminology.

From Fall 2006 to Spring 2007, the University participated in the data gathering phase of the NRC’s Assessment of Research Doctoral Programs. This extensive analysis (5,000 programs at 22 institutions in 61 fields of study) of the many aspects of graduate education is intended to provide data that allow comparisons among the similar programs. The study’s methodology is quite complex, and to help universities understand and explain it, the NRC, in July 2009, published “A Guide to the Methodology of the National Research Council Assessment of the Doctorate Programs”. The document is available at the site linked to by clicking on the title.
