In September 2009, SGG approved a new project to build and maintain an organization called a “Business Intelligence Competency Center”. Rana Glasgal is the Program Manager of this project, with Vijay Gandra is the Information Technology Manager. This article provides an update of the project.
The goals of this project are:
- Form an initial Business Intelligence Competency Center (BICC), including a data governance function, using proven processes and roles
- Train “virtual team members” to carry out the work of creating value from Stanford’s data resources
- Leverage data already in the EDW to develop 8 -10 integrated dashboards with which to monitor Stanford’s performance from a University, School, or Department level
- Create a roadmap for the future migration from our many reporting silos to OBIEE, eventually resulting in one reporting tool.
Much progress has been made toward these goals in the months since the project began. Several elements of a BICC have been formed: a steering committee, a focus group on research metrics/dashboards, and a data quality group for research data. In January, the newly-formed Steering Committee received training from a recognized higher education Business Intelligence expert, David Wells.
Also underway currently is the creation of a research data dashboard. By the end of this summer, a research data dashboard aimed toward high-level managers will be in operation. It will contain drillable graphs on awards, proposals, and other types of research metrics.
The Steering Committee continues to meet monthly, discussing topics such as data quality and stewardship, and prioritization of future dashboard building projects. The BICC looks forward to producing dashboards for faculty and/or staff data throughout the fall and winter months of FY11.
