PHYSICS INSTRUCTOR NEEDED for four-week residential
summer institutes for talented youth. June 20 - July 16
for students age 14-16.
Compensation: $4000
Stanford's Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY) is looking
for an
instructor for its Introduction to Physics Summer Institute. The
Summer Institutes are designed to bring together talented high-school
and advanced-middle-school students with similar interests and
abilities, and to create an academic and social environment that
allows them to learn a lot while having a good time. In addition
to
this physics course, the Summer Institutes offer courses in
creative
writing, mathematics, computer programming, music theory, as well
as
other physics courses. Each course involves intensive study in a
single subject; that is, students participate in only one course
per
session. Students are selected for their demonstrated ability in
that
subject area (based on grades, test scores, samples of course
work,
teacher recommendations, and answers to a set of questions on the
Summer Institute application).
The curriculum for the Introduction to Physics course is
determined by
Dr. Gary Oas, head of EPGY physics. The class of approximately 20
students is staffed with 3 residential counselors who also serve
as
teaching assistants. For the most part, these counselors are
undergraduates or graduate students majoring in the subject area
for
the course they are working in, or in a related field, so that
they
are suitably qualified to provide instruction and guidance on the
academic part of the program. Also, the counselors are chosen for
their ability to serve as leaders in the residential and social
aspects of the program. Students are in class with the instructor
during the morning, and then in counselor-led study-hall,
tutoring,
and discusion-group period in the afternoon. The instructor is
responsible for making assignments for the students to work on
during
the afternoon study hall period, and for giving the counselors
guidance to work with students one-on-one and in small groups
during
the afternoon sessions.
Qualifications: Experience teaching in the subject area (as a
graduate
student, post-doc, instructor, or faculty member) desired.
Experience
teaching middle-school or high-school students desired.
