| The Paul
H. Kirkpatrick Award is given
to recognize those graduate students
who have demonstrated a capacity for
and commitment to the teaching of
physics to undergraduates, thereby
exemplifying the dual commitment to
teaching and research characteristic
of the late Prof. Paul Kirkpatrick's
own scientific life. A news
release on his death in 1992
states that he "was one of the
earliest critics of the growing
domination of research over teaching
at research universities, an opinion
he held since the 1920s. He was one
of the early leaders in the American
Association of Physics Teachers, and
helped bring about a rapprochement
between that association and the
American Physical Society, the
organization of researchers, which
for many years had been at odds." |

Levine Award is a
departmental award to honor the
memory of David
S. Levine, a brilliant 19 year
old physics major who was brutally
murdered in September, 1973. Awarded
to an outstanding junior in the
Stanford Physics Department on the
basis of academic breadth and
demonstrated abilities in
experimental physics. Number of
recipients and cash award varies

Jeffrey Willick Memorial Award
was established in memory of the
late Jeffrey
Alan
Willick, Assistant Professor
of Physics, who was killed in tragic
accident on June 18th, 2000, at the
age of 40. He had been a faculty
member at Stanford since 1995, and
was a renowned observational
cosmologist who was carrying out
groundbreaking work in measuring the
large-scale structure of the
universe. He was a conscientious
classroom teacher, and the leader of
a vibrant group of students and
postdoctoral fellows. This award is
given to an outstanding senior
physics major. Preference is given
to undergraduates studying
astrophysics. |
