The Stanford Climbing wall is open to all Stanford students, staff, faculty, and community. All levels from beginners to experienced are welcome. 25 ropes, 60 routes, and 30 boulder problems bring nearly 1000 unique visitors to the climbing wall each year. Classes are offered for those new to climbing, or for those who want to take their climbing to the next level. For class information, check in the Recreation Classes section. Climb On!
NOTE: For continuous updates on special events, holiday hours, outdoor trips, and all things climbing at Stanford sign up for the Climbing Wall Email List.
Admission and Belay Lessons
Admission is free to Stanford students, faculty and staff. Please bring your SUID with you. You will be asked to sign a waiver during your first visit, or you can print the waiver now, sign it, and bring it with you to avoid delays (for best results, print it as 2 sides on a single sheet of paper; both pages of the waiver are required).
Guests of Stanford students, faculty, and staff may gain access to the wall by purchasing a daily guest pass at the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation receptionist desk. The passes are $5 per pass or seven passes for $25. The passes are valid for the entire day on which they are used at any recreation facility.”
No experience is required to boulder around the gym (climbing at low height).
To use the ropes, you must pass a belay test. Beginners are welcome - free belay lessons are offered every hour on the hour (3 pm, 4 pm, etc.) and are subject to the safety considerations of the Climbing Wall Supervisor.
For a quick review of proper belay technique and safety considerations you can check out this video from the Professional Climbing Instructors Association. This video is intended as a review for experienced climbers and should in no way be used as a substitute for professional face to face instruction from the Stanford Climbing Wall staff.
Climbing Technique Classes
Various classes on climbing technique are available to students, staff and faculty. Each class is held 1-1.5 hours per week (Tue, Wed or Thu) usually in the 11am - 2:45pm time frame. Enroll through the Recreation Class Page.
