Stanford Table Tennis Wraps Collegiate Season
2nd in Women's and 19th in Coed Nationals

The representatives from the Co-Ed and Women's table tennis teams
that went to nationals returned late last night from Rochester,
Minnesota. Below are the results:

The Stanford Women's team overcame adversity to once again dominate,  finishing second in the nation to Texas Wesleyan in a hard fought  finals. This makes three years running that the Women's team has finished in the top two in the nation, twice in second and once in first. Despite her illness, and playing on an ankle she sprained in one of her matches at the tournament, Whitney Ping still managed to lead the team all the way to the finals without losing a single match. In addition, our very own Sally Schoenfeld made an astonishing series of comebacks to finish second in the ACUI Women's singles
consolation bracket, a truly remarkable feat that made her the only Stanford player to receive a trophy for individual play this year. The Co-Ed team made a very strong showing as well. The team won its first round robin match in a fifth game doubles victory over a very strong Columbia team. However, after losing a heartbreaking match to
Washington that resulted in a three-way tie for second in their round robin, the team was unfortunately relegated to the 19th-24th place consolation bracket. The team went on to finish out the tournament strong, winning the bracket and finishing 19th in the country.
Special acknowledgment and thanks must be given to our volunteer coach Fernando Chang, who flew all the way to Minnesota with the team just to coach us. He was at every match Stanford played, and was instrumental in securing victories for both of the teams.

Stanford Judo takes 1st at Collegiate Judo Nationals

Stanford Judo sent two competitors to Collegiate Nationals held at University of Wisconsin, Stout. Rochelle Nguyen, '10, took 1st place in both the womens 63kg and 70kg divisions. Ling Shao, '09, took 2nd place in the mens 66kg division. Both competed in the Novice Division (below brown belt). Their wins earned the Stanford Judo Team 1st place in the Novice Division overall.

Stanford Equestrian Team makes History with both English
and Western teams qualifying for National Championship!

The Stanford Equestrian Team just returned from the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone Finals in Twin Falls, Idaho. It was a long and grueling show--by far the hardest we've faced in 3 years--mostly because of the horses from Idaho and Utah that were definitely not what we were used to (i.e. they were a little scary!). This lead to a very long and drawn out battle with our Team competitors: Oregon State, Montana Western and Cal Poly Pomona. Our Individual competitors each squared off against 8 of the top riders from schools in our Zone ranging from British Columbia to Arizona.

We started the Individual competition with our first rider, Anders Jones, being thrown into the 3rd fence of his course (and, thereby, disqualified) on a scary horse. Our next Ind. rider, Kate Fernoff, entered on another scary horse and was promptly thrown into her 2nd fence. Luckily she held on long enough for me to lobby for a new horse and a re-ride--she wiped off the dirt, remounted on a new horse and finished 2nd, qualifying her for Nationals!

We had a few more tough draws (including our varsity swimmer/walk trot rider Andrea Axtells 3rd place finish--one place out from qualifying for Nationals), but our Alumni rider, Kat Bechtel finished our Individual competition on a high note with a win in Flat, moving
her on to Nationals.

In the Team competition we had some hard draws in fences--and all of our riders were nervous after watching their teammates (and many others) hitting the ground/fences/etc.

But we rode well and had:
KC Simon 2nd in Open Fences
Margaux Bennett 2nd in Intermediate Fences
Pam Geist 3rd in Novice Fences

We began the flat classes with:
Teresa Field 2nd in Advanced
Claire Menke (in just her 2nd quarter of riding) 4th in Walk Trot
Margaux Bennett put in an extraordinary showing and won Novice flat
Pam Geist finished 3rd in Int. Flat

This left us entering our last class with Oregon on the top of the leader board for the first time with 34 and a three way tie for second with 33.

The rules for a tie decree that any tie is decided by the number of 1st place ribbons (and we only had one) meaning that we needed to either finish second and have Oregon finish last or a win to finish first or second and move onto Nationals. Unbelievable pressure for
our anchor-leg Open rider,  Sarah Scharf in her first year of post-season showing.

She drew a three year-old (baby) slip of a horse and her teammates (and coach) were incredible nervous as it was certainly the hardest horse of the class. But never count the Cardinal out! Sarah rode an amazing class and won the class, not only qualifying Stanford for Nationals, but also securing the Zone Championship!

Final Score:
Stanford: 40, a tie for 2nd with 38 for Cal Poly (the tie winner) and Oregon and Montana at 36!

I am so happy that we will have both our English Team and our Western Team going to the National Finals for the first time in Stanford History! (It is the English Team's 3rd consecutive visit and the Western Team's 1st). Bill Lane was so excited to hear that he said he'd like to put an ad in the Stanford Daily--quite sweet of him!

Thanks for all your support of our wonderful student athletes as we look forward to riding in the first Nationals held on the west coast in over 10 years--at the LA Equestrian Center, May 8-11.

Go Cardinal!

Winter Facility Schedules Posted!
Indoor Sports should check out suwellness.stanford.edu for the updated winter-quarter facility schedules.  We tried to take into account everyone’s time requests, but in many cases, they are difficult to satisfy without displacing many other groups.  Keep in mind we are working with many factors including:

  • Keeping gyms open for general recreation
  • Intramurals coming indoors for winter
  • Varsity Athletic Events
  • Other Special Events

NOTE: Intramurals don’t start until the second week of Winter Quarter, so don’t be alarmed when you see some empty gym time in the first week.

MANDATORY* MEETING: Tues Jan 15, 2008 @ Kissick Auditorium
All teams must send a representative.  Preliminary Agenda Items: Winter Financial Aid, President’s Fund Renewal, Gymnastics Set-up Fundraisers, Travel Policies, Help with Travel Planning.

* ASSU Clubs not required, but encouraged to attend.

Sherry Posthumus  9/24/45 - 12/3/07
Club Sports lost a great friend and leader this week with the passing of Sherry Posthumus.  For those of you who have been involved with club sports since 2005, you remember Sherry as the Assistant Athletic Director in charge of Club Sports.  She spent nearly 25 years in the athletic department, taking initiative to help grow the Club Sport programs team-by-team.  Sherry left Stanford in January 2006 to battle the brain cancer that eventually took her life this week, aged 62 years.
There will be a celebration of her life on Sunday 12/9 from noon-2pm in the Gold Room at the Stanford Faculty Club.  Students who knew her are welcome.  Please feel free to share this info with your alums – many of them worked with her closely!

Club Sport Credit
Grades are due next week! Not all teams have folks registered.  I’ve sent rosters to team captains and have yet to hear back from a few of you...  Lacrosse, Running, Triathlon, W Ultimate.

January Meeting!
There will be a Club Sport Meeting in January after 1/14/07.  More details to come!  All Teams must send a representative.

Good Luck on Finals!!

“BEAT CAL” Fundraising Opportunity
Marketing needs 50 workers (10 people from 5 teams?) to hand out 30,000 “Beat Cal” t-shirts at BIG GAME on Dec 1 from 1pm-4:30pm (Kickoff at 4).  Super easy and a great way to advertise your own Club Team!  Teams may be able to do it in shifts.  Money will be good! Contact Amy if you can put together 10 people (or more!).

PAC-10 Fitness Challenge
Have everyone on your team go online and register... BeWell.stanford.edu  - and sign up to log your practice/workout hours in the PAC-10 Challenge today!!  This is the first year and it is taking place this week...  The Challenge “tracks physical activity levels among students, faculty, staff, and alumni...”  Stanford took the lead yesterday with 14,296 “miles”.  WSU is second with 12,224 “miles”.   (Cal is in last place with 506 “miles”.) Check the website at:   pac10fitnesschallenge.com

COMMISSARY SPACE – Good News, Bad News
The Bad news is... We lost the Commissary Space altogether for emergency food storage (probably spurned on by the earthquake last week).  Te good news is...  We get to keep our containers on Stock Farm!  Although they must be moved, so some work will go into getting them move-ready.  Contact Andy Fields for more details (andyfields@stanford.edu).

WINTER QUARTER- Practice Time
We’re beginning to schedule for Winter Quarter.  As you may remember, many groups and intramurals come inside in the winter, jamming our already packed facilities.  Please let Amy know NOW if you have any changes in mind for your practice time.

Team Leader Checklist:

  • Are all your waivers in to the Club Sports Office?
  • Have you checked your team’s mailbox?
