ATH 132 Swimming: Advanced
This class is for those who can swim 100 yards freestyle continuously and have had an introduction to backstroke and breaststroke. In this class you will refine the 4 competitive swimming strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, & review/intro to butterfly) and efficient breathing techniques. You will gain additional development of flip turns using intervals (100 yard repeats) and competitive starts and turns, as well as the use of swimming equipment (kick boards, pull buoys, hand paddles, fins) for fitness. Videotaping with review will be used to improve your strokes.
Ability to swim 100 yards of freestyle continuously. If you have not had an introduction to breaststroke or backstroke, we recommend you take ATH 131 Swimming Intermediate.
Refinement of all 4 competitive strokes, execution of 100 yard interval sets with flip turns (Freestyle, Individual Medley). Build strong foundation for reaching your swimming fitness goals (i.e. lap swimming, triathlons, masters swimming, open water swimming.) Evolve to swim 1,000 – 1,500 yards per class.
A. Refinement of Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and review/introduction to Butterfly

C. Enhancement of breathing techniques
D. Improve cardiovascular fitness
E. Interval and pace training
F. Introduction of competitive starts and turns
G. Treading water endurance
H. Evolve to swim 1000-1500 yards per class.
I. Use of swimming equipment such as kickboards, pull buoys and fins.
J. Videotaping (under and over water)
Stanford students, Faculty/Staff and Stanford Community are eligible to participate in Physical Education Classes.Stanford Community members are Dependents, Hospital Employees who have purchased an Athletic Access Card, Retirees and Spouses/Partners of a Student, Faculty or Staff who have obtained a Courtesy Card from the ID Card office.
PE classes can be taken by faculty, staff and Stanford Community on a space available basis. Please show up on the first day of the class and speak with the instructor. If the instructor has space, he/she will give you the password for this link which will allow you to register. Class fees for faculty, staff and Stanford Community are $50, unless higher class fees are listed.
