ATH 129 Swimming: Beginning
This class is for non-swimmers. In this class you will learn how to relax in the water, breath effectively, Class Description: This class is for non-swimmers. In this class you will learn how to relax in the water, breath effectively, float and tread, swim 3 different strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke), jump in the water from the deck, use swimming equipment (kickboards, pull buoys, fins) and swim across a 25 year pool.
If you have fear or anxiety in the water, consider taking the ATH 128 Confidence in Water class.
If you can swim across a 25 yard pool, you should take the ATH 131 Intermediate Swim class.
Non-swimmer, unable to swim across a 25 yard pool.
Learn to be safe and relaxed in shallow and deep water. Develop ease and efficiency with breathing & swimming strokes. Be safe and comfortable swimming 25 yards continuously.
A. Learn how to relax, and feel in control and prevent panic in deep water
B. Explore and understand buoyancy, balance and breathing
C. Be comfortable with back floating, transitions and recoveries
D. Be comfortable and in control in shallow water
E. Be comfortable and in control in deep water
F. Introduction and development of Freestyle,
G. Introduction to Backstroke and Breaststroke
H. Basic introduction to Elementary backstroke
I. Swim continuously 25 yards
J. Introduction to treading water
K. Controlled jumping in to semi-shallow water, 4-5’ deep (deep water)
L. Safe entry for deep water
M. Use of swimming equipment such as kickboards, pull buoys and fins.
N. Learn pool and swimming etiquette
Stanford students, Faculty/Staff and Stanford Community are eligible to participate in Physical Education Classes.Stanford Community members are Dependents, Hospital Employees who have purchased an Athletic Access Card, Retirees and Spouses/Partners of a Student, Faculty or Staff who have obtained a Courtesy Card from the ID Card office.
PE classes can be taken by faculty, staff and Stanford Community on a space available basis. Please show up on the first day of the class and speak with the instructor. If the instructor has space, he/she will give you the password for this link which will allow you to register. Class fees for faculty, staff and Stanford Community are $50, unless higher class fees are listed.
