Saving the Shores

Hours after he visited the Hopkins Marine Life Refuge at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station and attended the National Oceans Conference in Monterey on June 11 and 12, President Bill Clinton extended the current ban on offshore oil drilling in California and most of America's other coastal states for 10 more years. He also announced new initiatives to reduce overfishing and improve the nation's harbors.

Stanford graduate students guided Clinton and Vice President Al Gore during the tour of the Stanford facilities.
