TRACK AND FIELD CROWNS

Junior Tracye Lawyer joined the tiny, illustrious group of athletes who have won consecutive heptathlon championships. This spring she successfully defended her 1997 heptathlon crown at the 1998 Pac-10 championship meet. She won four of the seven events and was no lower than second in the other three. Her career best - and a Stanford record of 5809 points - was the nation's highest this year. She also earned Stanford's Most Improved Player award.

The men's track and field team came in second in the NCAA outdoor championships, the highest finish since 1963 (the last time Stanford won was in 1934). The women's team finished ninth, the best in six years. It is the first time that both teams finished in the top 10.

And Cardinal athletes brought home three individual titles: Toby Stevenson in pole vault, Brad Hauser in the 10,000-meter, and Monal Chokshi in the women's 3000-meter.
