TENNIS GLORY

A monster-truck sized unstoppable bulldozer: that's even too mild to describe Coach Dick Gould's men's tennis team, which won its fourth straight NCAA championship, and 16th overall.

No other university tennis team has such a record. Stanford was 28-0 in match play for its third perfect season (1987 and 1995 were the others). The team was 143-2 in singles, and 43-3 in doubles.

The NCAA championship victory came over the University of Georgia on Georgia's home courts. Stanford swept Minnesota, UCLA and Mississippi State, 4-0, on its way to the final.

Stanford then won the NCAA singles and doubles championships. Bob Bryan overpowered his teammate Paul Goldstein in the singles finals, and teamed with his twin Mike to beat a Pepperdine duo in the doubles. Gould acknowledged: "This is without question the best team I've ever coached."
