CREATING CRITICAL MASS
Stanford, UCSF Agree on Joint Health Venture

By Judy Frabotta

Hoping to ensure high-quality teaching, research and health care in an increasingly competitive marketplace, Stanford will merge the clinical services of Stanford Health Services with the University of California-San Francisco Medical Center (UCSF).

The new entity tentatively named UCSF Stanford Health Care will include Stanford University Hospital and Clinic, Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital, UCSF Medical Center and UCSF/Mount Zion Hospital.

“Stanford and UCSF share identical missions and values,“ said President Gerhard Casper, “including providing the most advanced care in the world, teaching the doctors who will care for our children, and making life-saving discoveries.“

The merger, which has been in the works for more than a year, received approval from all parties on Nov. 15, though many technical details remain to be arranged.
