evin Madden walks off the field, breathing in the redolence of the Master’s Grove eucalyptus, silhouetted by the setting California sun. He ponders his obsession with soccer.

“It’s about a ball, a field and you,” he says. “The rest is just variations on that theme.” Pausing, he affects a highbrow repose. “Wasn’t it Eliot who spoke of a condition of complete simplicity?”
