‘The One Duty We Owe to History is to Rewrite It’

he following article is condensed from a forum held at Stanford as part of a conference sponsored by the School of Humanities and Sciences called “E Pluribus Unum?” In the conference keynote address on Feb. 8, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Arthur Schlesinger told several hundred faculty and students that, in its “militant” form, multiculturalism “becomes an alternative to, even a holdout against, the concept of a common nationality.” The next day, a panel of historians addressed the role of cultural diversity in the writing and teaching of American history. The panel was moderated by Stanford history Professor George Fredrickson.
