Philip Zimbardo to deliver final Stanford lecture on March 7
A half-century after Philip Zimbardo nervously prepared to deliver his first lecture to a group of Yale University students, the psychology professor emeritus—a Stanford institution for four decades—returns to campus March 7 to perform his final, official university duty as a guest lecturer in the course Introductory Psychology. Scrutinize retirement funds, senate urges
The Faculty Senate last week passed a motion asking faculty members and staff to review their retirement-fund investment choices in light of the university's policy of divesting from stocks that support the Sudanese government, as well as to consider personally divesting from Fidelity Investments, whose owners invest in companies that do business in the troubled North African country. Extracurricular writing 'extraordinarily important' to undergraduates, study finds
Among the 15,000 pieces of student writing Professor Andrea Lunsford has collected in recent years are e-mails in 11 languages, a video of The Hip Hopera, an AIDS poster, a website on cleft palate, music and lyrics, lab reports, research papers, honors theses and poetry. Registration now open for spring Continuing Studies courses
Registration for spring quarter courses offered by Continuing Studies began Monday, Feb. 26, and continues through April 4. There are more than 100 courses to choose from, ranging from the liberal arts, foreign languages and studio art to business, personal development and communication. Full Story

Student-organized conference seeks to air new perspectives on clean energy
Stanford University will host "Energy Crossroads," an interdisciplinary conference March 1-3 offering fresh perspectives on the future of clean energy. Distinguished speakers include New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, former CIA Director Robert James Woolsey, partners from top-tier Silicon Valley venture capital firms and leading researchers on energy policy and technology. Alumni couple Yang and Yamazaki pledge $75 million to the university

| The bulk of the $75 million gift by Yahoo! Inc. co-founder and Stanford Trustee Jerry Yang and his wife, Akiko Yamazaki, will be used to cover construction costs for the new Environment and Energy Building. The eco-friendly structure is expected to be complete in December and will be located at the corner of Via Ortega and Panama Street. |

Plans to build new homes for Stanford Daily, police move ahead
The Board of Trustees last week approved the site and concept for a new $3.75 million Stanford Daily building. It will be a two-story, beige stucco building with a clay-tile hipped mansard roof designed to complement the architectural style of nearby buildings on Panama Mall. Full Story
