Scrutinize retirement funds, senate urges
The Faculty Senate last week passed a motion asking faculty members and staff to review their retirement-fund investment choices in light of the university's policy of divesting from stocks that support the Sudanese government, as well as to consider personally divesting from Fidelity Investments, whose owners invest in companies that do business in the troubled North African country. Registration now open for spring Continuing Studies courses
Registration for spring quarter courses offered by Continuing Studies began Monday, Feb. 26, and continues through April 4. There are more than 100 courses to choose from, ranging from the liberal arts, foreign languages and studio art to business, personal development and communication. Full Story

Helen Josephine to join university as head librarian for engineering
Helen Josephine, who has spent more than 25 years working as an information professional in corporate and academic settings, will join Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources as head librarian for engineering on March 15. Full Story

Staff workshop on retirement benefits set
The Benefits Department will hold a workshop for employees about Stanford's retirement benefits on March 9. The presentation is designed to be a "refresher course" to remind employees how to take advantage of the university's matching contribution to their Stanford Contributory Retirement Plan (SCRP) account. Community Day set to return April 15 with new attractions
Community Day comes back to campus on Sunday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event—now held every other year—is an all-day, family-oriented university "open house" with more than 50 activities sponsored by student groups and departments across campus. Full Story

Police warn campus community of ID thieves 'phishing' for private information
Stanford police issued a warning last week regarding a recent rash of e-mails addressed to members of the Stanford community that appear to be sent by bona fide financial institutions, but that are in fact an attempt to obtain private information such as bank account numbers and passwords. Top percussionists to play on campus as part of weeklong Asian music festival
"Drum Beats of Asia," the title of the third annual Stanford Pan-Asian Music Festival, kicks off Saturday, Feb. 17, with a concert featuring world-renowned tabla player Zakir Hussain in collaboration with master percussionists Abbos Kosimov and Vince Delgado, and others. Full Story

Cooling tower leak at SLAC last week blamed on corroded containment barrier
