Rich vs Sparse views of perception and their Relation to Cognitive Accessibility

Ned Block

New York University

One of the most interesting issues in the philosophy of perception is whether the impression we have of a rich visual field involving conscious representations of many objects is an illusion, a "refrigerator light" illusion, in which we mistake easy accessibility of conscious representation of objects for their current presence. This talk concerns the relation between the controversy between rich and sparse and a more general issue of whether perceptual consciousness has a capacity different from that of the cognitive accessibility system that underlies our reports of perceptual consciousness.
