SERVICE OF A LAWSUIT: Someone is asking me to
accept service of a lawsuit? What should I do?
The only authorized agent for service of legal process (such
as a summons and complaint) for the University and the Hospitals
is the Office of the General Counsel.
No one else should accept service on behalf of the University
or the Hospitals.
If you are being named individually in a lawsuit as a defendant
or respondent you can accept service on your own behalf. If the
lawsuit involves the University or the Hospitals in any way --
even if they were not named as defendants or respondents or if
you were not served on their behalf -- please transmit a copy
of the complaint and summons to the Office of the General Counsel
immediately.
If the lawsuit does not have anything to do with the University
or Hospitals, you may want to consult a personal
lawyer.
LEGAL REPRESENTATION: I have been sued. Will
the University represent me?
In most instances, if you are being sued because of your work at Stanford
or the Hospitals, you will be represented by Stanford or the Hospitals.
For more information see the Administrative Guide Memo 15.7 at http://adminguide.stanford.edu/15_7.pdf.
If you're being sued because of personal activities, the University
will not represent you. The University cannot recommend a specific
lawyer to you, but there are many lawyer referral services
in the area. If you have any additional questions, you may contact
the Office of the General Counsel.
SUBPOENA: I have been subpoenaed as a witness.
What should I do?
If you have been subpoenaed in connection with activities at the University,
please contact the Office of the General Counsel.
SUBPOENA FOR DOCUMENTS: I have received a subpoena
to turn over documents (subpoena duces tecum) relating to University
business. What should I do?
Except as to subpoenas handled regularly by Human Resources, Payroll,
and the Hospitals (which should be referred directly to those offices
or entities), you should not turn over documents relating to the University
or the Hospitals without consulting first with the Office of the General
Counsel. You should, however, insure that any documents described
in the subpoena are kept for possible production.
If the documents relate to Stanford or the Hospitals, you should immediately
contact the Office of the General Counsel and forward them a copy
of the subpoena.
PROBATE: Where do I send a notice of petition
to probate a will where the University is named as a beneficiary?

in a University vehicle or while on University business. What should I
do?
You should report the accident to the police and to Risk Management
pursuant to the guidelines set forth at http://www.stanford.edu/dept/
Risk-Management/docs/vehicleguide.shtml.
ACCIDENT (NOT AUTOMOBILE): I have been involved
in a non-automobile accident on campus. What should I do?
The University requires that all accidents be reported to Risk Management.
The accident reporting form is located at http://www.stanford.edu/dept/
Risk-Management/docs/ forms/su-17.html.
THEFT: Something has been stolen from me. What
should I do?
Please report the loss to campus police at 723-9633.
ILLEGAL ACTIVITY: I am concerned that a University
employee may be committing fraud or failing to comply with the law.
What should I do?
Stanford takes seriously its obligations to comply with applicable
laws and regulations and to act ethically in its business dealings.
You are encouraged to report such instances of noncompliance.
Please see the Code of Conduct for Business Activities at http://adminguide.stanford.edu/15.pdf.
HEALTH & SAFETY CONCERNS: I'm concerned
for my personal safety on campus. What should I do?
If there is an immediate threat to your safety or the safety
of others, you should immediately call 911.
Employees should consult their Supervisor or other Managers.
Students should contact the Dean of Students Office at http://www.stanford.edu/dept/DOS.
If you are being harassed or stalked, contact the police and
the Office of the General Counsel.
If you are concerned about workplace hazards, contact Environmental
