Ms. Westerlind is a 1982 graduate of the University of
San Francisco Law School and has been at Stanford since 1975. Areas
of legal practice include bankruptcy law; contracts; real estate; construction
matters; personal injury; breach of contract; fraud/misrepresentation/breach
of fiduciary duty; unlawful detainer; medical malpractice/risk management
and quality assurance issues; and legal actions against SUH, the Faculty
Practice Program and the School of Medicine. Ms. Westerlind also participates
in settlement negotiations and in decisions allocating costs among these
entities.
Other areas of Ms. Westerlind's law experience have included First
Amendment and due process issues; researching and providing advice to
and drafting opinions on matters related to student disciplinary actions;
amending the Legislative and Judicial Charter; drafting rules and procedures
for student academic grievances; conducting reviews of specific cases
on behalf of the University president; advising the Medical School on
process and procedures relating to issues of suitability to practice
medicine; and researching and advising the Office of Student Affairs
on various laws, such as the Buckley Amendment.
In addition, Ms. Westerlind works with the University's self-insurance
program, reviewing new claims and legal actions, and working with the
University's Risk Management Office in setting reserves, monitoring
each tendered action and assisting in discovery.
